When It's Time to Repair Windows
If your windows require repair, you must work with care. First, you should put on a pair safety gloves and cut-resistant gloves to prevent shards of glass from slicing you while you work.
A quick fix for a broken window is to put an aluminum cover over the crack. This will prevent snow, rain and insects out of your home.
Glass that has cracked
Broken windows not only make your home less attractive, but it can let drafts and other elements to enter the home. It doesn't matter whether the cracks result from an impact, like soccer or a baseball, or stress, like the sudden temperature drop, but it is important to have them repaired as quickly as possible to avoid further damage and keep your windows functioning properly.
If your window is cracked but not broken, a quick solution is to use clear tape to cover it. This is a simple, inexpensive solution to shield your window from water, dust, bugs and other sand. It also shields your windows from the weather.
If the crack is becoming larger or is getting more large, it is recommended to seek advice from an expert. A professional glazier will determine the cause of the crack and recommend the most effective repair procedure.
Impact cracks are the most frequent window cracks. They typically occur when a hard object hits your window with enough force that it breaks. These cracks are typically accompanied by a starburst pattern of lines and broken pieces that could be dangerous if they fall loose. The crack could affect the gas in the panes of your double-pane windows and lower its energy efficiency.
Stress cracks are another type of crack that develops over time due to extreme temperature fluctuations and other environmental factors. These cracks begin around the edges of your window and eventually expand into full-blown break.
A more serious, but feasible crack is one that is a pressure crack. It is a curvy curve that extends across the window on one or more sides. It can be caused by high or low pressure, which can cause the glass to expand or contract.
If you're ready to take a step beyond tape and nail polish, there are a few other products available for repairing cracks in your window glass. Glass Repair Film, while more expensive, will give your windows more protection and durability. If you prefer to make it yourself, epoxy is an adhesive that can be used to fill in cracks and stop further damage. It will make your window appear as if it never had any cracks in it at all.
Leaking Windows
If you notice a damp spot under your window, or you notice that the wood around it is brittle or rotting, it could be time to start a windows repair. Excessive moisture creates the perfect environment for mold and mildew, which can lead to a myriad of issues for your home. They can lead to indoor air pollution, sagging drywall, and can increase the severity of allergies. If not checked, they could cause structural damage to your home.
If the water is coming in from outside or visible through the frame it's a good idea to contact a professional to assist to fix the problem immediately. Leaking window repair are one of the most common causes of mold and structural damage So don't leave them untreated.
In many cases, a thin caulking layer is enough to stop the leaks. Before applying the new caulking, it's necessary clean the area and remove any existing caulking.
Check the weepholes on the frame for debris. These holes are designed to remove rainwater, but they can also become blocked in time due to insect corpses or other debris.
If you have double-paned windows You'll also have to examine the seal between the glass and the frame. This will help to maintain a barrier between the glass panes and make windows more efficient. As time passes, the seal can be worn out and allow water to enter your home.
Another indication of leaks is the presence of water stains on the ceiling and walls. These occur when wall is soaked with moisture that weakens its fibers and leads to discoloration. You might also find peeling paint as a result of water weakening its adhesive properties and tearing it away from the wall.
Faux Muntins & Mullions
In the past, mullions and muntins (or glazing bars in the UK) separated and held glass panes in the classic multi-pane windows. After WWII, larger expanses tempered glass were available. They're mainly used as decorative elements in some older homes.
Sometimes, a single or small group of these wooden supports may get damaged by wind or rain and cause cracks to the window. Repairs can be made to the majority of these brittle or decaying parts.
First take a rag and clean the affected areas. Use a cleaner based on ammonia that does not leave traces. Take off any rotting or loose pieces and cut the intersections of the horizontal and vertical window muntins with an exacta knife. Once you've trimmed the intersections, you can tape off the lower portion of the window frame using painter's tape. Then, you can apply a heavy coat of white paint, paying special attention to areas that were lightly coated in the first coat. Allow the paint to dry completely before removing the tape and applying another coat.
If the problem is more severe such as an hourglass-shaped crack in the middle of the window, it's best to replace the sash. In these instances, you'll need to look for a replacement that matches the window that is in place in terms of the design and size.
For a less expensive alternative you can also put in an attached grid window. These windows are constructed of a complete glass pane that has a series of muntins that are fixed to the surface. This creates a split appearance. These windows are not as energy efficient as traditional windows.
If you're looking for a simple method to modernize your windows, you should consider installing a new drip cap in order to stop water from leaking around the window frame. Most home centers sell these aluminum drip cap options for around $20. They're much easier to install than a replacement window sash, and they'll provide you with the same functionality as a real mullion or muntin.
Broken Sashes & Frames
A broken window sash should be a sign that you should seek help. A sash that is broken left unchecked can cause water leaks, wood rot and other serious problems to the frame and sill. If you've damaged your sash, it is recommended to replace it immediately to ensure that the window is properly sealed.
Most of the time, the issue is caused by worn out or improperly hung the sash cords. Luckily, replacing these is relatively simple and is possible in the majority of double-hung windows. First, you'll need to take off the tabs of metal that hold the sash. To do this, push up on one side (it does not matter which side) of the sash and then pull it toward the opposite side to take it from the window frame. You'll want to carefully remove the strip that is what separates the sash from other side so that you can get to the location where the sash cords reside.
Once you've removed the sash, it's important to make sure you examine its metal tabs against the ones on your new sash. If they're not the same it's difficult to place the new one in its place and affect how the sash functions. Fortunately, this can be easily rectified by placing tabs in the correct places on your new window.
In addition to the sashes, you'll have to examine the frame of your window for problems or rot. This is a good thing to do on a regular basis, as wood will shrink and wear down over time. If you find any obvious damage, it should be fixed as quickly as possible to prevent a bigger problem from developing.
If your window frames are in bad condition, you'll need to treat them with a homemade preservative created by mixing half mineral spirits with half boiled Linseed oil. After the treatment has dried, you can finish your frames with a high-quality latex paint. A fresh coat of paint will also shield your window from the elements.
