METHODS: Serum-free thiol concentrations were determined by colorimetric detection in 3802 patients from the BIOlogy Study to TAilored Treatment in Chronic Heart Failure
Associations between free thiol concentrations and clinical characteristics and outcomes, including all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and a follow-up, were reported. RESULTS: Lower serum-free thiol concentrations were associated with more advanced HF, as indicated by worse NYHA class, higher plasma NT-proBNP and with higher rates of all-cause mortality per standard deviation decrease in free thiols: 253, confidence interval : 171-341, P < 001), cardiovascular mortality , and the composite outcome . CONCLUSIONS: In patients with new-onset or worsening HF, a lower serum-free thiol concentration, indicative of higher oxidative stress, is associated with increased HF severity and poorer prognosis. Our results do not prove causality, but our findings may be used as rationale for future studies on serum-free thiol modulation in heart failure. Here, we investigated functional changes in leukocytes' mitochondria in obese individuals and their associations with NAFLD. controls. We observed that the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation capacity with complex I + II-linked substrates in peripheral blood mononuclear cells , which was measured using a high-resolution respirometry, was significantly higher in the obese group versus the controls. The PBMCs' mitochondrial complex IV capacity was also higher in the obese subjects. All of the obese subjects had hepatic steatosis defined by a fatty liver index score ≥ 60, and there was a positive correlation between their FLI scores and their PBMCs' mitochondrial OXPHOS capacity.

The increased PBMCs' mitochondrial OXPHOS capacity was associated with insulin resistance, systemic inflammation, and higher serum levels of interleukin-6 in the entire series of subjects. Highlighting such species-distinct key differences, but also similarities, this review provides a full, comparative anatomy analysis of sensory innervation of the cornea for all species studied to date.
