The sash is an interior frame that moves upwards and downwards in windows that open. This article will teach you how to make several simple sash repairs.

Weather Stripping

Wooden window sashes are a great way to add an elegant look to your home. They are also durable and will last for many years provided they are properly maintained. Sash Weights

Sash weights can be changed to enhance the efficiency of your window sash and reduce energy costs. These weights function as counterbalances, which allows you to open and close the window without requiring mechanical or electrical devices. To replace sash cords the first step is to remove the access panels from the jambs. They are typically screwed or nailed into and require removal. It may be possible to remove them with an axe or hammer, however, it is best to lay out dust sheets prior to beginning any work.

Once the access panel is removed, you can start working on the sash. Use a flat bar or chisel, to pry the narrow parting beads out of their grooves. They are typically wedged into or nailed, but they can be snipped out and it's worth your time. If the sash remains in place, pull the mortise and tenon joints free with a screwdriver or hammer and then take out each wood peg. It should now be possible to move the sash back and forth without difficulty, though it might require lubrication if it feels stiff.

Take a measurement of the length of the sash chain or sash cord required to reach the sash slot at the bottom, and the pulley on the top of the jamb. Cut the chain or cord and secure it in the previous step. You can employ a hammer, screws or nails, but nails are less likely to cause damage.
