The Strike

Twenty African American laundresses organized a group in the summer of 1881, dubbed the Washing Society, and went on strike to demand a better wage for their work. They contacted their church and social organizations to help them spread the word. In just three weeks the membership of the Washing Societies increased from twenty to three thousand. The Washing Society spoke in public and went door-to-door visiting churches, and encouraged other laundresses to join the movement. White business and government officials began responding by threatening fines and incarcerating leaders of the group. They also tried to destabilize this group by proposing to tax members of the Washing Society, and by building a steam laundry to drive out the women who wash clothes.

Despite attempts to halt their strike, the women refused to give up. They continued their protest and gathered more and more support from other domestic workers like cooks and maids, hotel workers and nurses, all demanding higher wages for their work. In the end, the City Council gave in and agreed to let the Washing Society pay a $25 annual fee in exchange for retaining their autonomy.

The city council was not thrilled with this decision. The city council was concerned about losing control over the labor market since the new organization was threatening to organize all domestic workers in the city. In an attempt to put the brakes on the power of the black washer, it launched an effort to impose the annual fee of $25 on all laundry workers regardless of whether or not they were members of the Washing Society.

The washerwomen proved a formidable force and their perseverance resulted in a positive outcome in the end. Their success is a testament to the power that black workers can harness when they organize and unite to fight for a more hygienic life for themselves as well as for their communities. Today, the legacy of the washerwomen and their dedication to a dignified job continue through the work of organizations like the National Domestic Workers Alliance and the Fight for $15.

Although the outcome of the Washing Society's strike is uncertain however, the legacy they left behind is clear. It was a reminder of how black workers are powerful and an inspiration to future generations.

The Washing Society

In the summer of 1881, 20 African American washerwomen met to form the Washing Society, or union to fight for better wages, respect, and control over their work. Using grassroots organizing strategies, they canvassed neighborhoods through door-to-door campaigning and local ward meetings in order to recruit laundresses to their group. In just three weeks their strike grew from a mere 20 members to over 3,000. Although white newspapers heavily criticised their use of direct, militant action, this was highly effective at building the power and unity required to prevail.

Their demand for a single dollar per dozen pounds of laundry would have significantly increased their incomes. They were able convince customers to support them and motivated domestic workers such as cooks, nurses and maids to organize. This remarkable success demonstrated black women's remarkable ability to organize in large numbers and utilize grassroots strategies to disrupt business as usual.

As with many other blacks of the South, these women were unable to find jobs outside of sharecropping or household labor. Many women emigrated to cities in search of better employment opportunities such as cooks, maids, or maids. These positions offered more autonomy than their rural counterparts however, the pay was still subsistence and not enough to support the family.

During Reconstruction, Black women's labor was viewed as essential to the city and should not be ignored. The Washerwomen's strike was an opportunity to remind the white establishment that they could not operate without them. The Washing Society campaign was successful in highlighting the importance of respect and dignity at work.

The City of Atlanta

In the summer of 1881, twenty laundresses in Atlanta formed the Washing Society and started a strike to gain higher wages. The Society quickly expanded to three thousand members through door-to-door canvassing and with the help of local black churches. Municipal authorities began fining and detaining Washing Society women, but they refused to give up. They refused to stop protesting until they were paid a dollar wage.

African American communities experienced extreme violence and oppression twenty years after the end of slavery in the United States. Lynchings became common and Jim Crow laws limited African Americans access to education as well as military and labor unions. In the midst of this dreadful period, the strike of the washerwomen in Atlanta is a remarkable success story of worker-led determination and organization.

As the city grew, it expanded into a series ring-like neighborhood that included Home Park, Virginia Highland, Candler Park/Edgewood, Sylvan Hill, West End, and Washington Park, a Black suburban area, to the west.

Atlanta is a bustling city with a variety of places of interest and cultural centers which include the High Museum of Art and Woodruff Arts Center. Other notable landmarks include Piedmont Park and the Margaret Mitchell House. The city also houses many bars and restaurants and is a regional business and sports center. Additionally, the city is a major military center and is the hub of federal government activity in the Southeast.


The Struggle
