The Strike

Twenty African American laundresses organized a group in the summer of 1881, dubbed the Washing Society, and went on strike to demand a better pay for their work. They contacted their church and social groups to help to spread the word. In just three weeks, the Washing Society's membership increased from twenty to 3000. The Washing Society spoke in public and went door-to-door, visited churches and encouraged other laundresses to join the movement. more.. and city officials responded by warning of fines and threatening to arrest the leaders of the group. They also attempted to discredit this group by proposing to tax members of the Washing Society, and by creating a Steam Laundry to eliminate the women who were washing laundry.

Despite the attempts to stop their strike, the washerwomen did not back down. They continued to protest and gained the support of other domestic workers, including cooks and maids as as hotel workers and nurses who all demanded better wages for their jobs. Eventually, the City Council gave in and agreed to let the Washing Society pay a $25 annual fee in exchange for their autonomy.

The city council was not thrilled with the decision. The city council was concerned about losing control over the labor market as the organization was just beginning to organize all domestic workers in the city. To limit the increasing influence of black washers, the council started an effort to enforce the $25 annual fee for all laundry workers, regardless of whether or whether or not they belong to The Washing Society.

The women who worked in the washer proved to be powerful and their perseverance paid off in the long run. Their success was an example of the power black workers can harness when they unite to fight for a more hygienic life for themselves and their communities. The Washing Society

In the summer of 1881 20 African American washerwomen formed the Washing Society or union to push for higher wages respect, control and respect for their jobs. Employing grassroots organizing strategies they went door-to-door canvassing and local ward meetings to recruit laundresses into their organization. In only three short weeks, the strike expanded to over 3,000 members. These positions provided more freedom than their rural counterparts but the wages were only subsistence, and was barely enough to support families.

During Reconstruction, Black women's labor was considered vital to the city and should not be ignored. The Washerwomen's Strike was an opportunity to remind the white establishment couldn't be successful without these women. The City of Atlanta

Twenty laundresses from Atlanta formed the Washing Society in the summer of 1881 and began a strike to demand better wages. Through door-to-door canvassing and support from local black churches The Society quickly grew to 3000 members. Municipal authorities began slapping fines and incarcerating Washing Society women, but they refused to surrender. They would continue their protest until they were awarded an amount of one dollar.

African American communities experienced extreme violence and oppression twenty years after slavery was officially abolished in the United States. Lynchings were commonplace and Jim Crow laws limited African Americans access to education, labor unions and the military. The women's strike in Atlanta is an excellent example of worker solidarity and perseverance during this tense period.

The Washing Society's success led other urban African American groups to organize and fight for their rights. Many of these groups joined forces with other groups to form an national civil rights movement, which led to the formation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (1903).

Atlanta's economic and industrial growth was the result of its civil rights movement. In 1940, the city had an overall population of more than 496,973 and was growing at a rate of over 70,000 a year. The city's landscape was changed by the expansion of automobiles, businesses and other industries. As the city grew, it was transformed into a series ring-like neighborhood that included Home Park, Virginia Highland, Candler Park/Edgewood, Sylvan Hill, West End, and Washington Park, a Black suburban development, on the west.

The city of Atlanta is a vibrant metropolitan area with many cultural centers and landmarks which include the High Museum of Art, the Woodruff Arts Center, Piedmont Park, the Margaret Mitchell House, and the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The city also has numerous bars and restaurants and is a major regional business and sports center. The city is also a major military hub and a center of federal government activities in the Southeast.

The Struggle
