Rune bersifat fonetik, yang artinya sesuatu ditulis dalam rune berdasarkan bunyinya dan bukan berdasarkan ejaan yang biasanya. Ada beberapa hal yang perlu diperhatikan saat menulis rune.
1. harus memikirkan bagaimana suatu kata dilafalkan.
Hal ini dilakukan untuk mengidentifikasi mana huruf yang dibunyikan dan mana yang tidak. Hingga akan menentukan mana huruf yang ditulis, dan mana yang tidak karena huruf yang tidak disuarakan tidak perlu dituliskan.
Contoh:
kata LOVE dibaca /lǝv/ jelas terlihat bahwa huruf E pada akhir kata tidak dibunyikan, maka huruf E tidak perlu untuk ditulis.
2. tidak ada huruf ganda.
Jikadalam sebuah kata terdapat dua huruf konsonan yang sama beriringan, maka hanya satu yang dituliskan. Sedangkan jika ada huruf vokal yang sama beriringan, maka tuliskan dengan huruf rune yang bunyinya mendekati.
Contohnya kata HAPPY, maka cukup satu huruf P yang ditulis.
