This Week's Most Popular Stories Concerning Glazing Repair
Glazing Repair - How to Repair a Cracked Window

Glazing can have a major impact on the energy efficiency of your home. This is especially true for older double-glazed Windows.

While it is possible to replace glazing points while the window is still in place, it's quicker and easier when the frame and glass are removed. This is also a great opportunity to replace the gaskets on the rubber.

Broken Glass

Glass that is cracked isn't just ugly, it can also let valuable heat and sunlight escape your home. Fortunately, it's often possible to repair a broken window without having to go through a full replacement.

Wear safety goggles and gloves. You should also put an X-shaped piece of tape an "X" shape on the glass that you plan to remove (duct or painter's tape work well). This will prevent any broken pieces from falling while you work, which can protect you from serious injury.

Cover a small scratch on your window with tape to keep bugs, water and wind out. One strip of tape should be sufficient for cracks with a superficial appearance, but if you're worried about the weather getting worse before you can replace your window, you should use a more durable plastic cover such as a tarp or a trash bag, to hold the glass in place until you can find a permanent solution.

Make sure you use a strong adhesive that is designed for windows to fix cracks. Loctite Super Glue Glass is a great choice. This high-tech glue is designed to bond to glass and dries clear to give a perfect finish. Apply it to the cracks in the glass and allow it to dry completely before applying a new layer.

Glass windows can also develop stress cracks. They're typically caused by dramatic temperature fluctuations, and they can quickly spread across the entire glass window if not treated. To avoid stress fractures that result from stress, use a glass cutting tool to score a small arc near the crack. This will prevent the crack from spreading and slow it down for a few days.

Examine the frame of the broken window to determine the size of the new pane. It should be slightly smaller than the opening to allow for expansion and contraction and to make up for any imperfections in the glass or frame. After cutting your new glass, apply glaziers' compound around the edges of the frame and glass. Once the compound dries, paint over it to match the frame of the window.

Condensation on the Inside of Double Glazed Windows

Condensation inside double-glazed windows is typically an indication that the seal around the window unit has failed. This is a serious issue because it could indicate that heat is lost from your home through the window.

New double glazing is designed to prevent heat transfer between two panes of glass by sandwiching a layer of air or a vacuum between them. This creates an airtight seal and keeps warm air from exiting the house. If double glazing repair is cooler than the frame, condensation could develop on the glass and cause damage to the window. If you are unable to solve condensation issues on a double-glazed window by opening windows, using extractors, using dehumidifiers, or trickle venting, then you might require the assistance of a professional.

It's less likely for condensation to appear on the outside of double glazed windows but it can occur in the event that the seal between the glass and the window frame is beginning to break down. This is more common in winter as the temperature is lower and it's easier for condensation to develop. The primary reason for this is a defect in the spacer that is used between the frame and the window. The spacer is often filled with desiccant that is extremely absorbent and absorbs excess moisture.

The issue with this is that when the desiccant is saturated, it begins to break down and then water can begin to enter the gap between the glass units. This can cause water and condensation to build up in the gap, which is difficult to get rid of.

The good news is that most reputable window companies will offer an assurance on their products. They should replace the window unit and glass when it's damaged by condensation. Make sure to report any issues as soon as you can to your window installer to ensure that the condensation is repaired as fast as possible to avoid further damage.

Shattering Window Glass

A damaged window can be more than just an aesthetic issue. It could also pose an injury risk, particularly when it's spreading. It is recommended to get it repaired as quickly as possible. There are many ways to go about it by using glass adhesives made for windows of vehicles that can be purchased through the internet or at numerous auto repair shops. Alternately, you can make use of a glazing compound formulated for use at home that can be found in a lot of hardware and home improvement stores.

Put on a thick pair of gloves and safety goggles before you begin any work. The area should be swept to get rid of any large shards. Also, you should vacuum up any chips. This will prevent them from causing injury to you or a glass repair person later on.

It's a good idea to work from a ladder, instead of standing on the ground. This will make it easier to reach all the areas of the frame and will keep you safe from falling glass. It is also recommended to wash the rabbet prior to starting with the installation. This is the part of the frame around the window frame that is where glass is likely to go. Apply a coat linseed to the rabbet, then wipe it clean. This will help the putty stick.

After the frame is cleaned and the rabbet is prepared It's now time to make the replacement pane. Measure the height and width of the opening in both directions, then order the double-strength piece of glass that is 1/8 inch smaller in both directions. You'll need glass points which is a steel triangle that keeps the glass in the right place.

With the window sash removed and the pry-bar flat, use it to gently pry the sash free of the moulding of wood. You may need to scrape old glazing putty off using a utility knife or chisel. Utilize the heat gun to warm any putty which isn't able to be removed easily. This will make it easier to peel off.

After the frame has been removed from the mold and the frame is pressed gently into the new glass into its place. Fill in the gaps with the glazier's tip or a putty knife. After the putty has dried paint the frame in a similar color to the putty. Lap the paint slightly over the edge of the compound and onto the glass to seal it completely.

Replacement Window Glass

Wear a pair of gloves and eye protection when replacing a broken pane of glass. Tape off the area surrounding the broken window to stop it from breaking again in a different spot after you remove it.

Utilize a utility blade to remove the old glazing compound from the frame and glazing points (small triangles of metal). Clean the frame opening and apply a layer of linseed oil to make the new putty stick to it better.

Once the frame is in place, measure it for a new window pane and purchase it from a local home improvement store or other retailer. Order the panes 1/6th inch smaller in each direction than your measurement. This will ensure a snug fit.

It's easier than you think to set up windows that are new. However, it is important to follow the instructions given by the manufacturer to ensure a perfect fitting and long-lasting replacement. Use a wire brush to clear the frame of old paint or wood gunk, and then sand it to bare wood in order to enhance the seal between the sash and frame.

Make use of the tip of the putty knife when inserting the new pane to lightly place it against the frame made of wood. Then, press the glazier's points into the frame approximately every six inches to keep the window securely in place.

After the frame has dried, paint the new joint several times until it matches the frame. Allow the paint to dry completely before cleaning and maintaining your windows. Maintaining windows in good condition and ensuring that they function correctly will extend their lifespan and improve the energy efficiency of your home. If your windows are older or in poor condition, you may be better off having the complete replacement of your windows. If you decide to go down this route, we suggest choosing a high-quality, insulated window that can reduce the cost of your utility costs. The kind of window you pick will also influence the overall cost of your project.
