Types of Laser Cutting Processes

toronto laser cutting are ideal for cutting various non-metallic materials such as acrylic, melamine, mother of pearl, paper and dense card.

CO2 machines utilize a beam path delivery system consisting of mirrors and bellows. For optimal performance, these parts must be regularly maintained/replaced so as to deliver maximum power from their laser source.
Cutting Metals

Laser cutting machines are typically utilized for creating cuts and engravings on various materials, from flat sheet metal to more intricate materials like elliptical tubes or D shaped pieces.

Laser technology has long been employed for aerospace work due to its exacting tolerance capabilities. Aerospace engineers can use laser cutting technology to optimize strength and weight of components while meeting cosmetic demands of parts.

The type of laser used for aerospace applications depends on the material thickness and precision required. Fiber lasers tend to work best with thinner metal sheets while CO2 lasers excel when cutting thicker materials due to the difference in wavelength between these types. With their larger wavelength, CO2 lasers absorb more energy from given volumes of material resulting in a smaller spot size on their beam enabling it to slice through thicker materials more easily.
Cutting Plastics

CO2 laser machines typically excel at cutting organic materials (non-metallic), such as wood and plastic. This is due to their laser beam being absorbed by whatever they cut.

However, this process may create issues if the material used to create it is highly reflective and does not absorb light efficiently; light will then reflect off its surface into equipment where it could cause irreparable damage to mirrors and lenses.

Fiber laser machines are more versatile, cutting a range of materials including non-metals. Their use also produces superior cut quality when cutting thicker sheets of metal than CO2 machines, with five times faster cutting speeds compared to using nitrogen as assist gas in 6kW CO2 lasers - particularly noticeable for steel up to 1/2 inch thick where their lower kerf diameter and absorption rate enable easier laser cuts.
Cutting Wood

CO2 lasers are well suited to cutting a range of organic/non-metallic materials like wood, paper and plastics. Additionally they can cut non-reflective metals requiring higher power (wattage).

Beam Path Delivery System. In order to deliver laser light efficiently to a cutting head, a beam pathway delivery system must reflect and refocus it along a series of corridors called "beam pathway delivery systems." To protect against dust particles interfering with full laser light delivery, this system uses laser gasses that purify its contents with protective laser gasses that filter out any dust particles that would hinder it's proper delivery.

This system can become misaligning over time and requires regular cleaning/replacement. Furthermore, its small spot size and narrow kerf size necessitate high assist gas pressures in order to remove melt from your cut edge, creating a slightly rougher surface with fine striations marks that requires careful balancing of cutting parameters for optimal performance; making this task more complex to manage for untrained operators.
Cutting Other Materials

The laser beam is guided through a system of mirrors or fiber optics to direct it towards a workpiece, before reaching a lens that focuses it into an intense spot known as the focal spot.

Focal spots are where laser energy density is highest, enabling precise cutting without thermal deformation. Additional factors including beam shape and mode, material absorption rates, assist gas usage rates and cut front geometry all affect how well lasers cut through materials.

CO2 laser machines are ideal for thicker metals due to the longer wavelength that allows it to penetrate more deeply into materials. CO2 machines also offer greater versatility with materials as they can cut both metals and non-metals with just slight tweaks of settings; however, mirrors and bellows must be regularly checked/cleaned/replaced so as to maintain peak performance and avoid performance losses.
