Glazing Repair - How to Repair a Cracked Window
Glazing can have a major impact on the efficiency of your home. This is particularly important for older double-glazed windows.
It is possible to replace the glazing points with the window still in place, but it is much easier and quicker if you remove the frame and glass. It is a good idea to replace the seals made of rubber.
Broken Glass
Cracked windows are not only ugly, but they can also allow valuable heat and sunlight to escape your home. Fortunately, it's possible to repair a damaged window without the need for full replacement.
Begin by putting on your protective gloves and safety glasses. Also, you should put a piece of tape in an "X" shape on the glass you plan to remove (duct or painter's tape work well). This will stop any broken pieces from falling when you work, which can save you from serious injury.
Cover a small crack on your window glass using tape to keep bugs, water and wind out. If the crack is superficial just a single strip of tape will suffice. However in the event that the weather is expected to worsen before you can replace the window, you might need a more durable plastic cover such as the trash bag or tarp.
For cracks that aren't quite as shallow Try using a strong adhesive that is specifically designed for windows, like Loctite Super Glue Glass. This high-tech adhesive is formulated to adhere to glass and dries crystal clear for an ideal finish. Apply it to the crack and let it completely dry before applying another layer.
Glass windows may also develop stress cracks. Stress cracks are usually caused by large temperature changes and can spread rapidly across the entire window if not repaired. To prevent stress fractures that result from stress, use a glass cutting tool to cut a small circle near the crack. This will stop the crack from spreading and can slow it down for several days.
If you're replacing a damaged window take measurements of the frame to determine the size of the new pane. It should be slightly smaller than the opening to allow for expansion and contraction, and to cover any imperfections in the glass or frame. After you've cut your glass to the proper size apply glaziers' compound around the edges of the frame and the glass. After the compound has dried, paint over it to match the rest of the frame.
Condensation inside of Double Glazed Windows
Condensation inside double-glazed windows is typically an indication that a seal on the window unit has failed. This is a serious issue since it means that the heat that is coming from your home is lost through the window, and can be costly for you and your energy bills.
Double glazing is designed to block heat transfer between two panes by putting an air or vacuum layer between them. This creates an airtight seal that stops warm air from escaping the home. If the glass is warmer than the frame, condensation could form on the glass and cause damage to the window. If you have condensation on your double glazed window and you are unable to resolve it by opening the windows, by using extractor fans, dehumidifiers, or by trickle venting then you may require the help of a professional.
It's rare for condensation to form on the outside of double-glazed windows, however it can happen when the seal between the glass and frame has started to deteriorate. This is more common in winter as the temperature is lower, making it more likely for condensation to develop. The primary reason for this is a flaw in the spacer that is used between the frame and the window. This spacer often contains desiccant that is highly absorptive and will soak up excess moisture.
This can lead to moisture seeping through the gap after the desiccant has been saturated. This can cause condensation and water to build in the gap which is difficult to remove.
The good news is that most reliable window companies will provide an assurance on their products. They will replace the window unit and glass if it has been damaged by condensation. It is essential to report any problems to your window installer as soon as you notice them so that condensation can be addressed as quickly as possible to avoid further damage to the window unit and the frame around it.
Shattering Window Glass
A damaged window is more than an aesthetic problem. It could also be an injury risk, particularly when it's spreading. It is best to get it fixed as quickly as you can. There are double glazing to fix it with glass adhesives, for instance, using ones specifically designed for windows in vehicles that can be purchased online or at many auto maintenance stores. You can also make use of a glazing compound for home use that is available at a variety of hardware and home improvement stores.
Before you begin any work, put on thick cut-proof gloves and safety glasses. Then, sweep the area to remove large pieces of shards. You should also vacuum any chips. This will prevent them from cutting you or a glass repair person in the future.
It is a good idea to climb a ladder instead of standing on the ground. This will allow you to reach all the parts of the frame with ease and protect you from glass falling. It's also recommended to wash the rabbet prior to starting, which is the area around the perimeter of the window frame, where glass is likely to go. Clean it and then apply the linseed oil to the rabbet, which will allow the new putty to stick in place.
Once the frame is cleaned and the rabbet ready, it's time to plan the replacement of the broken pane. Order a piece of double strength glass that is one inch smaller in both directions. You'll need to purchase glass points which is a metallic triangle that holds the glass in the right place.
With the window sash out of the way, gently pry it off of the wood molding using a straight pry bar. You may need scrape off old glazing with a utility knife or chisel. Make use of the heat gun to warm any putty that cannot be easily removed. This will make it much easier to remove it.
After the frame is removed from the mold then gently press the glass back into its place. Fill in the gaps using either a glazier's tipped or a knife. Once the putty is dry paint the frame in a similar color to the putty. Paint the glass and the compound by overlapping it slightly.
Replacement Window Glass
If you're replacing a damaged window, be sure to wear gloves and eye protection to protect yourself from glass shards. Tape off the area surrounding the broken window to prevent it from breaking again in a different spot when you remove it.
Begin by removing the old glaze compound and glazing points (small metal triangles) from the sash frame using a utility knife. Clean the entire frame opening and then apply a coat of linseed to help the new putty adhere better.
Once the frame has been made, measure it to determine the dimensions of the new windowpane. Then purchase it at an home improvement store or other retailer. Choose the panes 1/6th inch smaller in each direction than you measurement. This will ensure a snug fit.
Installing the new window is simpler than you think, but ensure you follow the instructions of the manufacturer to ensure a proper fit and a long-lasting life for your replacement pane. Use a wire brush to clean the frame of old paint or wood gunk. then sand it down to bare wood in order to increase the seal between the frame and the sash.
Make use of the point of the putty knife when putting in the new pane to lay it gently against the frame made of wood. Put glazier's tips in the frame every six inches. This will help hold the new window securely in place.
Once the frame has been cured, coat the joint with a few coats of paint to match the rest of the frame. Let the paint dry completely before proceeding to cleaning and maintaining your window. Making sure your windows are clean and operating correctly will prolong their useful lives and improve your home's energy efficiency. You may want to replace your windows if they're old or in poor condition. If you decide to go with this option, we recommend selecting a high-quality insulated window to lower your energy costs. The type of window you select will also impact the total cost of your project.
