It's the most popular color for refrigerators, ovens and cooktops, but it's also stealing the spotlight in laundries. Black washers are the newest laundry appliances that promise to add a bold style to your home.

Look for models with elegant finishes and ample space to carry large loads.

The Strike

Twenty African American laundresses organized a group in the summer of 1881 that was called the Washing Society, and went on strike to demand a higher pay for their work. They called upon their church and social groups to help to spread the word. Within three weeks, their membership increased from 20 to 3000. The Washing Society spoke in public and went door to door visiting churches, and encouraged other laundresses to join the movement. White businesses and city officials reacted, threating fines and arresting the leaders of the organization. They also attempted to discredit this group by proposing to members of the Washing Society, and by building a steam laundry to eliminate the laundry women.

In spite of these attempts to derail the strike, the women refused to back down. They continued to protest and earned more and more support of other domestic workers including cooks and maids as well as hotel workers and nurses who all demanded better wages for their jobs. Eventually the City Council gave in and agreed to allow the Washing Society pay a $25 annual fee in exchange for retaining their autonomy.

The city council, however, was not happy with this decision. The growing union threatened to organize other domestic workers in the city, and the council was worried about losing control of the market for labor. To limit the growing power of black washers the council started an effort to enforce the $25 annual fee for all laundry employees regardless of whether or whether or not they belong to The Washing Society.

The women who worked in the washer proved to be an imposing force and their perseverance was rewarded in the end. Their success is an example of the power that black workers can harness when they organize and unite to fight for a more dignified life for themselves and their communities. Today, the legacy of the washerwomen and their dedication to dignified work live on through the work of organizations such as the National Domestic Workers Alliance and the Fight for $15.

The legacy that the Washing Society left behind is evident, even though the outcome of their strike is still uncertain. It was a reminder of how black workers have immense power and can be a source of inspiration to the next generation.

The Washing Society

In the summer 1881, 20 African American washerwomen formed the Washing Society or union to lobby for higher wages respect and control over their work. Employing grassroots organizing strategies they canvassed neighborhoods through door-to-door canvassing as well as local ward meetings to recruit laundresses to their group. In just three weeks, the strike grew to more than 3,000 members. While white media heavily criticized their use of militant, direct actions, they were highly effective in building the power and unified effort needed to prevail.

Their demand for a single dollar per dozen pounds of laundry would have significantly increased their own earnings. They were able to convince customers to support their cause and even encouraged other domestic workers like cooks and maids to organize. This astonishment at the success of black women's incredible capacity to organize a large number of people and employ grassroots strategies to disrupt the business model.

As with many others in the South had limited alternatives for work other than sharingcropping and household work. Many of them moved to cities in hopes of finding better opportunities, including employment as cooks, maids servants and laundresses. These jobs provided more autonomy than those in rural areas, but the pay was not enough to provide a family with enough.

In Reconstruction Black women's work was viewed as essential to the city and shouldn't be ignored. The strike of the Washerwomen was an example to the white establishment that they could not function without them. The Washing Society campaign was successful in highlighting the importance of dignity and respect at work.

The City of Atlanta

In the summer of 1881 twenty laundresses in Atlanta formed the Washing Society and started a strike to gain higher wages. Through door-to -door canvassing, and support from local black churches The Society quickly grew to three thousand members. Municipal authorities began slapping fines and incarcerating Washing Society women, but they refused to give up. They would continue their protest until they received a one dollar wage.

Twenty years after the end of slavery in the United States, African American communities suffered extreme violence and oppression. Lynchings were common and Jim Crow laws gave African Americans limited access to schools as well as the military and labor unions. In the midst of this horrible period, the women's strike in Atlanta is an amazing success story of worker determination and organization.

The success of the Washing Society inspired other urban African American groups to organize and fight for their rights. Many of these groups teamed with others to form an national civil rights movement that resulted in the creation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (1903).

Atlanta's industrial and economic growth was a result of the civil rights movement. In 1940 the city had an overall population of more than 496,973 and was growing at a rate of 70,000 a year. The automobile industry and other industrial and business expansion continued to transform the city's landscape. As the city grew, it was transformed into a series ring-like neighborhood which included Home Park, Virginia Highland, Candler Park/Edgewood, Sylvan Hill, West End, and Washington Park, a Black suburban development to the west.

Atlanta is a bustling city that has many cultural landmarks and centers which include the High Museum of Art and Woodruff Arts Center. Other notable landmarks include Piedmont Park and the Margaret Mitchell House. The city also is home to many bars and restaurants and is a center for professional and regional business sports. The city is also a major military center and a major hub for federal government activity for the Southeast.

The Struggle
