Hereditary Movie Review sudden
After making a huge splash at Sundance, Hereditary has been hailed as some of the terrifying horror films in current memory. And with good purpose. It’s a sluggish burn movie that reveals its true horror potential in the most unexpected methods. Director Ari Aster has a uncommon reward for visual storytelling and pacing, and his first function delivers a nerve-wracking experience that calls for a second viewing (or even a third).

The film opens with an ingenious pan throughout a miniature model of the household house, which seamlessly merges into reality. It’s a cryptic tease that alerts the layered, unsettling narrative to come, and it sets the tone for Hereditary as an intensely creepy and intentionally disorienting movie.

It isn’t a simple ghost story, however quite an exploration of familial grief and loss — the type of drama that always becomes a horror film’s best hook. The story follows the Grahams, a claustrophobic household with a chic brown-wood alpine home and a lot of hidden rooms. It’s too unhealthy that nice genre movies are sometimes pushed apart in favor of middlebrow ersatz artistry throughout awards season, but Hereditary deserves its due.
