Insureinfoq of Health and Mental Hygiene, the department that regulates the health care industry, has set up an advisory committee to improve the quality of health insurance in Maryland. There are four members of the committee: Robert Kocher, MD; Lisa M. Sorensen, MD; Nancy H. Brown, MD; and James E. O'Donnell, MD.
The group is to make recommendations on how to improve the quality of health insurance companies in Maryland. Members will be asked to review and critique the current Maryland insurance laws, the cost of insurance, the quality of service provided by insurance providers and the quality of care provided by hospitals and other health care facilities in Maryland. These issues will be discussed in detail and then the committee will create a report that will be given to the Maryland Department of Insurance for submission to the General Assembly.
A final report will be submitted to the General Assembly to be considered by the insurance commission, which is controlled by the state attorney general. If the commission approves the committee's recommendations, the state's insurance commissioner will issue new rules and regulations regarding health insurance.
The Health Insurance Task Force, also known as Health Care Task Force, was established in 2020 to provide the Maryland insurance industry with outside counsel and guidance. Its primary functions are to monitor changes to insurance coverage and to examine the performance of Maryland insurers.
This is a panel that has oversight authority over both private and public health insurance in Maryland. Its members will be charged with the responsibility of making recommendations about how to improve the quality of health insurance services in the state.
Insureinfoq will hold two meetings annually. One will be held at the Maryland Office of the State Comptroller in Baltimore, where it will present its initial findings to the secretary of insurance.
The second meeting of the Task Force will be held in Annapolis. This will be a one-day meeting that will be moderated by a state senator and will serve as the committee's official meeting.
In addition to its responsibilities as a monitoring agency, the Health Care Task Force will have a responsibility to make recommendations to the state attorney general on how to revise and update Maryland's insurance laws. and regulations.
As a member of the Health Insurance Task Force, a member will be required to submit to the attorney general for a three-year review, an annual report, and a study about the working of the health insurance industry in the state. A member will be required to give written testimony regarding his or her findings.
The attorney general has the duty to review and possibly make changes to the law to ensure that Maryland residents are treated fairly by the insurance industry. If the attorney general determines that the state's health insurance laws are not being implemented according to the intent of the law, he or she can issue a report. recommending changes to the law.
The Health Insurance Task Force will be required to review each attorney general's report and then present them to the General Assembly. For the final review, a committee will be appointed by the Health and Insurance Commission.
The committee will then produce its report to the Attorney General. The chair of the committee will have six months from when the attorney general receives the report to present it to the General Assembly for consideration.
At this point, the committee must then either approve the final report or send it back to the Attorney General for further review. The Health Insurance Task Force has a quorum consisting of five members who are appointed by the attorney general.
