Vampire hidup dengan memakan intisari kehidupan dari makhluk hidup lain, seperti darah manusia. Katanya, vampire yang dikenal sekarang berasal dari Eropa Tenggara, pada abad ke-18. Vampir biasanya diceritakan keluar dari 'tempatnya' pada malam hari untuk menggigit orang-orang dengan taring mereka yang panjang dan mengisap darah 'korban' mereka, yang akan menjadi vampire seperti mereka. Vampire baru populer pada awal abad ke-18 semenjak legenda vampire masuk ke Eropa Barat dan Eropa Timur.
Perbedaan Vampire di Eropa Barat dan Eropa Timur:
1. Eropa Barat
Vampire digambarkan sebagai makhluk yang berpenampilan rapih dan mewah.
2. Eropa Timur
Penggambaran mereka ada banyak, beragam. Mirip mayat hidup, mirip manusia, dan sebagainya.
Mitos mengenai vampire:
- Tidak nampak di depan cermin karena tidak memiliki jiwa.
- Dapat berubah menjadi kelelawar, gas, atau sebagainya, dan sensitif dengan sinar matahari.
- Dari sebagian besar cerita rakyat, vampire itu adalah mayat hidup, korban bunuh diri, atau Penyihir! Tetapi vampir juga bisa diciptakan dari roh jahat yang masuk ke suatu mayat dan melalui gigitan vampir lain. Atau seseorang yang terkena gigitan vampire, nantinya akan menjadi vampire seperti mereka.
