How to Repair a Broken Window
Whether from a bad storm or a ball thrown by your neighbors' children Broken windows are not something to be ignored. It could cause more problems including water leakage or a draft that increases the cost of energy.
Depending on the severity of the crack, there are a variety of ways to repair it. Here are some suggestions to consider:
Tape
A piece of old-fashioned tape can be used to temporarily repair cracks in your windows. It's affordable, simple to use and works well. Cover both sides of the crack area to ensure it's as secure as possible. This will limit the amount of air that will get into the window and cause damage to the glass or shatters. Clear tape is a good alternative because it appears better than duct tap and doesn't leave an unattractive residue after removal.
You can also buy specialized adhesive tape in the majority of hardware stores. It is available in 2 lengths of 30' x 2' and forms an invisible patch that will prevent the crack or tear from spreading further. This can be useful for windows for boat enclosures tent or RV vinyl windows, and even soft top car windows. It's easy to use and does not require any special tools or expertise. Cut the appropriate size, remove the release paper, then apply it. It is also resistant to salt and UV and is made of an extremely durable material that can endure harsh conditions. This will help you save money by keeping you from having to purchase a complete window replacement.
Super Glue
Super glue can be used to repair small cracks or chips in glass. These adhesives bond with hydroxyl ions on the glass's surface making a strong grip in a matter of seconds. These glues can also be used to attach ceramic, metal or wood to glass. They are resistant to moisture and high temperature. If you're working with an enormous project, it's worth investing in silicone or epoxy for a stronger hold and faster drying time.
Before applying any kind of glue to a window that has been damaged it is important to prepare the surface. You'll need to eliminate any debris that may be present and ensure that both surfaces are completely dry and clean. It is also recommended to roughen up the surface, especially if it is extremely smooth. A slight sanding gives the adhesive more surface area to stick to, resulting in a stronger bond.
When you're ready for the actual repairs, it's important to use a quality product that is specially formulated for glass. This will ensure the glue is safe and won't leave any unattractive marks or fingerprints. If you can, opt for a clear adhesive that will be transparent once it's dried. Avoid glues that expand once they dry, as this could cause cracks in glass.
It is also important to consider the way in which the glass is to be used. If it's going to be kept indoors and won't be subjected to excessive stress, then a basic super glue will work fine. If, however, the glass is to be part of the windshield it is advisable to choose an adhesive that is weatherproof.
Super glues typically take a few seconds to bond however, they may have different cure times. Some require chemical accelerators to speed up the process, therefore it's important to follow the instructions of the manufacturer carefully. It's a good idea to work in an area that's well ventilated and has windows that are open to increase air flow. This will allow the glue to dry quicker. You can also use a fan to increase the flow of air around the work area. This will help it to dry faster.

Paint
It is essential to paint a window thoroughly. This will make the new coat of paint appear nice and also ensure that it is able to stick well. Before starting, make sure that the window is clean and scraped to get rid of any bits of paint or wood that is loose or rotten. Remove any hardware, like handles and latches. You should also sand down the surface you plan to paint. This will give you an area that is smooth so that the primer and paint can join.
Protect the area around the window by using painters' tape and plastic sheeting. This will stop paint from getting on areas that aren't supposed to be painted. Green frog tape is ideal for this because it creates a clean line and is simple to remove. Painters tape is a great choice for edges that are close to the wall surfaces.
After the window has been secured then it's time to begin the actual painting process. You'll need to apply a few coats of primer and let each one dry before moving on. After priming the area you can lightly sand the entire surface with fine-grit sandpaper. This will make the surface smoother for the next coat and eliminate any dust.
If you are using oil or acrylic base paints and primers then you will need to wait for them to fully dry before you can begin painting. This could take as long as one day, based on the brand that you are using.
When window repairs and paint are dry, it's time to paint. Paint the rails (horizontals first) before painting the stiles (verticals). This will help stop drips from getting on the glass. Keep a wet cloth handy to wipe off any paint drips immediately.
