Mullions or dividers are common in multi-paned windows. In the past they were used to provide support for the windows and also to separate large sheets. They are now used as a decorative element and design for your home.

Sashes

The disassembly of the sash starts by taking the locking pins off the top of the window frame. Then, taking off the sash cords. Then, you need to remove the parting bead (vertical strips that hold the upper window sash). Finally remove the upper window sash. Once the sash has been removed, you can remove and store the hardware for the sash.

The mortise and the tenon joints of the sash are joined by wooden pegs. Remove the pegs with a hammer and pin punch. The pegs are usually larger on one side than the other. Remove the pegs on the smaller end to avoid damaging the sash.

There are pockets in which glass panes are secured once the sash has been completely disassembled. These pockets are often fixed by screws or pins and should be gently prised out with a sharp knife.

After the pockets have been removed, the sash is then able to be put in a new glazing compound. The writer puts the sash in bed using an easel made from wood, and then holds it against the easel as they work the compound into an edging or rabbet around the pane's opening. Once the sash is bedded it is allowed to dry for two full days before being reassembled. The sash is then treated with homemade wood preserver made using a mix of mineral spirits and boiled oils from linseed. Caps with drip Caps

Drip caps are simple, virtually invisible caps that redirect rainwater away from window frames during a storm. They are usually made of wood, but they can also be made from bricks or other masonry materials. Some drip caps are designed to be attractive, while others are more utilitarian in appearance. A quality drip cap will be resistant to the elements, and prevent water from getting into casings, which could cause wood rot.

A drip cap can be installed by a homeowner with some basic tools and some basic knowledge. However, many homeowners prefer to have a professional contractor install their drip cap. A drip cap must be nailed to the sheathing around a window at least one inch from the trim board, and it should slope away from the window. It is crucial to use galvanized nails and to apply a premium exterior sealant that is suitable for the underside of the drip cap and the sheathing.

Drip caps can be bought preformed from most home improvement stores and window retailers, or a homeowner can create them at home with a sheet of aluminum along with a vice and simple tools. To do this the homeowner has to first remove or cut a row of windows. Then, they will be able to cut a drip-cap to a length that is a bit larger than the width of the window. Once the drip cap has been cut, it is put under the flashing tape and nailed to sheathing with galvanized nails. The cap should be nailed on both ends and firmly attached to the sheathing.
