When It's Time to Repair Windows
It is important to be cautious when repairing your windows. First, you should put on a pair of safety gloves and cut-resistant gloves to stop glass shards from slicing you while you work.
Covering the crack with a plastic sheet over the crack is an easy solution for a window that has cracked. This will keep insects, snow, and rain from entering your home.
Cracked Glass
Glass that is cracked not only make your home appear less appealing, but it can also let drafts and other elements into the house. It doesn't matter whether the cracks result from an impact, such as soccer or baseball or stress, such as the sudden temperature change, but it is essential to have them repaired as soon as you can to prevent further damage and keep your windows working correctly.
Use clear tape to cover the cracks in your window if it is not broken. It's a cheap and simple solution that will provide some protection from dust, water bugs and other particles, as well as keeping out the elements.
If the crack appears to be getting larger or is getting more extensive, it is best to speak with a professional. A professional glazier will determine the root of the crack and recommend the best repair procedure.
Impact cracks are the most common window cracks. They typically occur when a solid object strikes your window with enough force that it breaks. window repairs display an arc of lines and broken pieces. They can be dangerous when they break loose. If you have double-pane windows this crack could compromise the gas layer between the panes, which can affect the efficiency of your window's energy use.
Another kind of crack is a stress crack, that develops slowly as time passes, due to extreme temperature changes or other environmental elements. These cracks begin around the edges of your window and can progress to complete breaks.
A more serious but possible crack is the pressure crack. This is most often a curvy line that extends across one or more sides of your window and can be the result of low or high air pressure, which could lead to expansion or contraction of the glass.
There are other products that can be used to repair cracks in window glass If you're willing to go further than tape and nail varnish. Glass Repair Film, while more expensive can give your windows more protection and durability. If you'd prefer to do it yourself epoxy is an adhesive that can be used to repair cracks and prevent further damage. It can make your window appear like it never had any cracks at all.
Leaking Windows
If you notice a damp zone under your window or the wood around it is soft or rotting it could be time to replace your windows. Mold and mildew thrive in excess moisture which can cause numerous issues in your home. They can affect the quality of indoor air, lead to sagging drywall and even worsen symptoms of allergies. If left unchecked, they can cause structural damage to your home.
It is recommended to contact a professional if the water is visible or comes from outside. Leaking windows are among the main causes of structural and mold damage, so don't leave them untreated.
In many cases caulking is a great option to stop leaks. You'll need to carefully clean the area first though, and take off any caulking that is old before applying a new layer.
It is also important to examine the weep holes on the frame to ensure they're not clogged with debris. These holes are designed to drain rainwater but can become clogged over time with insect corpses or other debris.
If you have double-paned windows, you'll also need to inspect the seal between the glass and the frame. This helps to keep a gas barrier between the panes, which makes windows more energy efficient. The seal can wear down with time and let water leak into the house.
The water stains on the ceiling and walls are another indication of the presence of a leak. They occur when the wall is soaked with moisture that weakens its fibers, causing discoloration. Peeling paint is another indicator of water altering the adhesive properties of the paint, and pulling it from the wall.
Faux Muntins & Mullions
In the past, muntins (or glazing bars, as they are called in the UK), separated and were used to hold the panes of multi-paned windows. After WWII, larger expanses glass that were tempered became available. They're mainly used as decorative elements in some older homes.
The effects of rain or wind can harm one support or a small group, leaving cracks in the window. The good news is that you can repair the majority of these rotting or brittle components.
First employ a rag to clean the affected areas. Make use of a cleaner based on ammonia that doesn't leave any residue. Remove any rotting or loose components and use an exacta-knife to trim the intersections between the vertical and horizontal painted window muntins. After you've trimmed the intersections, tape off the lower part of the window frame using painter's tape. Apply a thick layer of white paint to the areas that you lightly painted in the initial pass. Allow the paint to completely dry prior to removing the masking tape and applying the second coat.
If the problem is more severe, such as an hourglass-shaped fracture in the middle of the window, it's better to replace the sash. In these instances, you'll need to look for a replacement that is similar to the existing window in both style and size.
Installing a grid window is a cheaper alternative. These windows are constructed of a glass pane that has a series of muntins, which are glued to the surface. This creates a divi-sected appearance. These windows aren't as energy efficient as traditional windows.
If you're looking for a simple way to update your windows, consider installing a new drip cap to stop water from leaking around the window frame. The majority of home centers sell drip caps in aluminum for about $20. They're much simpler to install than a replacement window sash and come with the same functionality as a genuine mullion or muntin.
Broken Sashes & Frames
A broken window sash can be an obvious sign that it's time to seek some help. A broken sash, if ignored, could lead to water leaks, wood decay and other serious issues to the frame and sill. If you've broken a sill, you must replace it as soon as you can to ensure that your window is sealed and operating.
The problem is often caused by worn-out or poorly installed cords. It's easy to replace these cords on the majority of double-hung window models. To start, you'll need to remove the tabs made of metal that keep the sash in place. To do this, you need to push up on one side (it doesn't matter which) of the sash then pull it towards the opposite side to remove it from the window frame. You'll want to carefully remove the strip that divides the sash from the other side so that you can get to the location where the sash cords are.
After you've removed your sash, take the time to look at its metal tabs and compare them to the ones on your new sash. If they're not the same it's difficult to insert the new one in its slot and could affect the way it operates. This can be corrected by putting the tabs in their correct positions on your new window.
You'll need to check your window frame, too for any damage or decay. This is a good thing to do regularly, as wood shrinks and wears down as time passes. If you spot any visible damage it should be repaired as soon as you can, to avoid an even bigger issue from arising.
If your window frames are in poor condition, you'll have to treat them with a homemade preservative created by mixing half mineral spirits with half boiling Linseed oil. After the treatment has dried for two full days, you can then finish your frames with high-quality latex paint. A fresh coat of paint can aid in protecting your window from the elements, too.
