Why Window Repair Is Necessary
A pebble that is thrown by the lawnmower or a heavy drink that is set on your glass-topped table are one of the many things that can cause cracks in glass windows. A damaged window could allow wind, rain bugs and other harmful elements to enter your home.
While it is not possible to make a window that has been damaged completely invisible, there are ways to repair it and stop it from spreading further.
Water Damage
Water seeping through your window frame is an indication that you need to replace it. Moisture can cause rot to the wood of your window frame. It also can reduce the energy efficiency of your windows. A reputable window replacement company can replace your frames with no damage to them.
Wood rot is another issue that affects both the interior and the exterior of your window. If your windows are made of wood and have spots of rotting, a repair may be possible when the rot isn't advanced. If the rot has reached your muntins and mullions, (the parts of the window frame that hold your glass panes) it could be necessary to rebuild the windows. This can be more costly than purchasing a new set.
A deteriorated seal between double-paned windows is another issue that requires replacement. This can be a result of condensation or debris between the two panes, or it could be a sign that the insulation in your window has been damaged. Fortunately, the majority of modern windows have the insulation in them. This means they don't face the same issues that older multi-paned windows.
Unattractive casings, such as ones that are cracked, loose or rotten, as well as missing, can cause other issues. A damaged casing doesn't mean it's time to replace your windows, however. You might be able to sand it and repaint it to enhance its appearance in accordance with the condition of the wood and the surrounding.
If the casing on the outside isn't in great condition and you're looking to replace it, a fresh coat of weather-resistant paint for your exterior might be the best solution to prevent moisture from damaging your window. Installing new exterior casing can be an attractive and functional improvement to your home.
Paint that is peeling or chipped
Window frames and sills are usually close to the elements and suffer from sunlight and rain. Moisture is the primary reason for the peeling of paint around windows, particularly if the wood is exposed. Water seeps through the wood, and once it evaporates, the pressure below the paint film causes the paint to peel. Moisture can come from condensation on the interior, or from rain and snow on the outside. No matter the source it's essential to scrape and sand the surface and then repaint the area as soon as the paint starts to chip. Some skilled painters apply a water repellent preserver to the bare wood and thinned boiled oil before painting. This helps to slow the penetration of moisture into wood, allowing the new paint to stick better.
If the paint begins to peel off, it's time to repair your window. To catch any paint that might stray, place a dropcloth or tarp over the area before applying a new coat. Get rid of any paint that has fallen off using an utility knife. Be careful not to slash the wood below or cut the sheathing beneath. Let the area dry completely after scrubbing it thoroughly.
After the area has dried, sand it again with a fine-grit sanding block. This will prepare the surface for primer and create a substrate that is ready to receive paint. Use the correct safety equipment when you're using lead-based paint. Clean the sanded area and tape off any adjacent surfaces like baseboards to protect them from paint.
Then, prime and paint according to the instructions on the specific paint tin you're using. Follow the curing temperature and temperature guidelines on the can of paint, as they will vary depending on the type of paint. Paint Learn Additional Here with exterior-grade paint, and the interior surface with interior-grade.
Repairing chipped or peeling painted frames is a cheaper alternative to replacing them. If your window frames are damaged beyond repair however, it might be worthwhile to upgrade them to newer, more energy efficient windows.
Glass that has cracked
A broken window leaves your home vulnerable to wind and rain, as well as bugs. It's tempting to just replace the glass, but you could also fix it yourself if there isn't too big of crack or break. It's best to address small cracks as soon as they happen, before they get worse due to time or temperature fluctuations.
There are a variety of ways to make broken glasses almost invisible. But this isn't something that can be completed by a DIYer. Even a small chip can create a weak spot in the glass, which can lead to more breaks and a costly replacement. The best solution is to cover the crack with a piece of plastic. This covers the crack from the outside, which stops air or moisture from passing through. This could damage the frames or seals around windows.
Wear safety glasses and gloves prior to taking the broken glass out of the frame. You'll need an utility knife, scraper or chisel to get rid of any glazing points that hold the glass in position. Utilize the knife to cut away any wood that is bare, and then finish it off with linseed or a clear wood sealer.
The glass can be put back in its original position by using epoxy. This is the most time-intensive alternative, but it will also give your glass a more robust look. Choose the double-cylinder epoxy dispenser that distributes resin and hardener in a similar way. This allows you to determine exactly how much applied to the glass which will ensure a solid seal.
If you have double or triple-pane windows, make certain that the gas fills are intact when you reset the glass. These gases are essential for insulating your house and ensuring that heat stays inside during the winter and out during summer. If you remove the window, the gases escape and cause it to reduce its energy efficiency. You can replace the gas fills by using the same method that is used to repair cracks in other types of glass.
