The Impact of Thickness on Metal Laser Cutting Precision

Laser cutting is an efficient method for extracting material from metal parts, but heat generated when passing a laser beam through metal can create inconsistencies in surface finish finish of finished cuts.

Differing materials absorb laser energy differently, altering its overall cutting quality. Most current laser cutters can cut steel up to 25mm thick with quality cuts; however, this varies based on factors like thickness.
Power

Laser cutting machines can be affected by various factors that affect its quality and precision, one being laser power used to cut metals - with more powerful lasers providing faster and more precise cutting processes.

The type of metal also affects how much power is necessary to cut it. For instance, stainless steel has different melting points than aluminum. Furthermore, it is important to take thermal conductivity into consideration as part of your assessment of each material.

Higher-powered lasers may cut through thicker materials more easily, but it is essential to understand the specific requirements of each material being cut. For instance, thicker pieces often need lower-powered lasers in order to achieve satisfactory cut edges due to valleys and pits on its surface that change heat levels, potentially altering processing parameters and altering other processing parameters. Furthermore, internal structure of material has an enormous influence on cutting quality even with less powerful lasers.
Feed Rate

Laser cutting depends on several parameters to produce quality cuts, including material thickness, laser beam power and feed rate. Kerf width and Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) also play important roles - where laser light interacts with material to generate heat and affect its characteristics.

Laser cutting is an incredibly useful technology, yet it can be susceptible to errors. To achieve optimal results it's vital that the right equipment, workspace, and materials are chosen for optimum results. Metal composition plays an integral part in how well cuts come out - for instance a higher concentration of carbon can make mild steel more challenging to cut than stainless steel.

Table 5 and Figure 13 present data showing that readings at Points 2 and 10 indicate a lower feed rate produced smaller kerf widths and improved cutting quality, while Points 1 and 2 of Table 7 revealed higher feed rates produced larger surface roughness values.
Assist metal laser cutting toronto

At 100 IPM, when cutting material with a laser and creating a 0.010-in. wide kerf, all other aspects such as laser spot quality, feed rate and assist gas are likely equal; however, nozzle size could have an impactful impact on precision as could gas pressure and flow rates that evacuate molten metal away from the cut kerf.

Assist gases not only help to cool and vaporize melt, they can also play an integral role in determining cut precision. More specifically, their influence can determine where boundary layer separation exists within a kerf depending on how close to each angle the laser beam and gas flow are placed relative to one another.

Moving the nozzle closer to the laser beam causes compression shockwaves that have enough force to produce boundary layer separation in a kerf, while an angle of 20deg or greater between nozzle/laser beam and kerf promotes even flow structure within it, thus avoiding this phenomenon from occurring.
Material

Metal laser cutting machines offer unparalleled versatility when it comes to metal cutting. However, certain metal types may have a major effect on the quality of laser-cut edges produced.

Sometimes material properties cause the laser to burn away part of the kerf, leading to an unevenly cut surface. Conversely, material ductility can influence how much heat is distributed within its kerf.

HR-black steel's scaly surface produces pits and valleys that disrupt laser heating distribution, leading to variable kerf widths and other laser cutting parameters that could affect their cutting performance. Smoother materials like stainless steel can eliminate these problems. Brass (copper-zinc alloy), titanium and brass-zinc alloy also tend not to present these issues when cut with lasers; brass can even be cut more ductilely without producing issues during cutting operations compared with carbon steel; it is recommended when cutting thick or tough materials that an assist gas like oxygen or inert gases such as nitrogen/argon be used.
