Us Review - A Review of the New Jordan Peele Film Us
After the rousing success of Get Out, Jordan Peele’s sophomore effort Us was met with equal fan enthusiasm and critical acclaim. The film is a psychological thriller with a lot to say about American society, from racial tensions to class warfare to the power of impersonation. Its world-building is complex, but it’s also accessible. And it features twists, ironies, and false endings in abundance.

But it’s the work of Lupita Nyong’o that makes Us such a compelling and terrifying experience. Her ability to take on a character who is both identical and completely different is unparalleled. The two Adelaides—one child, one adult—are linked in their paranoia by eerie coincidences and shared trauma. But the most powerful moments in Us are those that show the depth of their humanity.

Nyong’o is a force to be reckoned with onscreen, and her portrayal of the tethered Adelaide is a masterpiece in its own right. Her performance taps into unconscious terrors, both within the audience and probably inside the filmmaker herself. She is the reason Us is so effective, even when its horror elements fail to reach full stride.

In particular, the movie’s homages to ’80s culture are subtly embedded in its imagery and dialogue. This is a nod to the idea that all Americans are connected, even if they’re disconnected from each other in some ways.

These subtle touches make Us feel like a much more mature work than Get Out, even if it is still very entertaining. It’s not as easy to read as Peele’s debut, but it’s more rewarding for its deeper meanings. The movie is a fascinating allegory, and it’s worth revisiting again and again to unpack its secrets. And it’s always best viewed with a friend so you can discuss all the implications and possible interpretations.
