The use of clear packing tape or masking tape can help prevent superficial cracks like spider cracks from getting more severe. Be sure to tape both sides of the crack.

Frames that are rotten

The rot of wood around windows isn't just a visual nuisance and a danger to safety and a potential safety hazard, it also decreases the insulation value of your home. The frames that are rotten can let cold air in your home, and warm air out, causing you to lose money. The wood that is rotting allows moisture into the frame and causes it to weaken. This decreases the frame's capacity to keep heat or cool in your home.

A frayed window frame could also expose your home to burglars who are able to easily break the window and gain entry to your home's interior. This type of damage could be avoided by fixing and re-building your wooden windows. Your home will look more attractive and safe.

When your wooden window sills and frames start to become rotten, it's important to have them repaired immediately before the issue gets worse. The first sign of rot will be visible cracks in your paint or spots of discoloration on the wood. The wood may feel soft, or it could be that mold can form on the inside of the window frames.

If you notice any of these issues it is essential to call in an expert to assess the damage and fix it immediately. Wood rot is a fast-growing issue, so the sooner you deal with it, the less costly and easier it will be to repair. If you put off addressing it until all the wood has turned to rot, it is impossible to repair.

In 95% of cases, rotting frames and sills are fixable If the rot is caught early enough. Our skilled and experienced technicians can replace the rotting areas of the frame, leaving you with windows that are as like new.

Muntins and Mullions

The mullions and muntins which create a barrier between your window panes isn't just ornamental, they also serve to support the glass. Therefore, they are a very common component of a window that can become damaged or broken. No matter if they're fake or real, if your mullions or muntins become cracked, chipped, or dented it is imperative to have them repaired, because they could be a major hindrance to the appearance of your home.

Muntins & Mullions

Although they look like they do, and are often confused (perhaps the alliteration is helpful) Mullions, muntins and mullions are two distinct components of a window. A reputable window installation firm explains the differences between them to avoid confusion and confusion.

Mullions, also known as dividers between glass panes, are a common feature in traditional multi-pane windows. Historically, they were used to support and separate large sheets of glass. They are a decorative element and style in your home.

Although mullions aren't the strongest part of your window, they do provide some security. If a burglar is able to break the window pane, he will probably smash the mullion in order to gain access to your home.

Putty can be used to repair damaged mullions and muntins. Window repair experts clean the surface and apply new putty and then secure them back in place. It's a relatively simple repair for windows that should not affect the functionality of your windows.

There could be problems with the frame or sashes in the event that your windows leak or fail to shut and open correctly. Certain sashes are stuck in the frames because of broken cords or springs. The sashes might also be too heavy, or they could have come off the track. Rebalancing springs and weights can make a sash hard to lower or raise.

The wood strips that hold a single pane of glass in place on an older window are called muntins, or mullions. If these become rotting they must be rebuilt. Window repair experts can replace rotten muntins and mullions, without affecting the performance of your windows.

The sill of old windows may not slope down enough to allow water drainage. It is crucial to look at the sill and make sure that it slopes downwards, away from the home. If it does not the drip cap can easily be installed. This simple step can decrease the chance of water infiltration.

Sashes

If your window sashes are not functioning correctly, it is important to examine the situation. The weather and time can easily affect wooden window sashes. If they don't open properly, air or water can quickly enter the room. Aluminum sashes could be ineffective due to similar circumstances. Sweating and dampness around windows are common indicators of such problems.

Most of the time, sash issues are the result of simple wear and tear. They are often fixed by filling, sanding and re-painting. However, more serious issues will require the removal of the sash. This task should be left to professional window repair companies.

The sash is removed by first removing the locking pins and the sash cords from the window frame. Next, remove the parting beads (vertical strips of wood that are holding the upper sash) and then pull out the upper sash. Once the sash is unlocked, you can remove the hardware for the sash and store it in a secure place.

The mortise and the tenon joints of the sash are held by wooden pegs. Remove the pegs using a hammer and pin punch. Most of the time, one side of the peg is larger than the other and should be removed from the smaller end to avoid damaging the sash.

When the sash has been completely removed, you will be able to see the pockets that hold the glass panes. These pockets are often pinned or screwed into place and must be gently snipped out with a sharp knife.

The sash is now ready to be glazed with a new compound. The author beds the sash by placing it against an easel, and then working the compound into the groove or rabbet around the pane opening. The sash should be allowed to dry for a minimum of two days before it can be assembled. The sash is then treated with a homemade wood preservative made of one-half mineral spirits and one-half boiling linseed oil. This will help reduce the amount of draughts and improve the ability to close and open the window.

Drip Caps

Drip caps are simple, almost invisible caps that draw water away from windows during a rainstorm. They are typically made from wood but could also be constructed of bricks or other types of masonry. Some drip caps are designed to look attractive and others are more utilitarian in appearance. A good quality drip cap is resistant to the elements, and prevent water from leaking into the casings, which could cause wood rot.

A drip cap can be installed by a homeowner with a few basic tools and some basic knowledge. Many homeowners prefer to hire a contractor to install their drip cap. A drip cap should be secured to the sheathing around a window at least one inch away from the trim board, and it should slope away from the window. It is essential to use galvanized nails, and to apply a premium exterior grade sealant to the underside of the drip cap as well as the sheathing.

Homeowners can make drip caps at home by using aluminum sheets, a vice, and a few simple tools. To make them, the homeowner must first remove or pry up a row of windows. Then, they will be able to cut the drip cap to a length that is slightly larger than the size of the window. After the drip cap has been cut, it is placed under the tape, and then nailed using galvanized nails to the sheathing. The cap should be nailed on both ends and firmly secured to the sheathing.
