How to Repair a Broken Window
Broken window glass can be caused by a storm or a child playing an object. It could cause more problems, such as water leakage or a draft which increases your energy bills.
There are several ways to repair the crack depending on its size. Here are a few options to consider:
Tape
A good old-fashioned piece of tape can be a temporary solution to cracks that have formed in windows. It's easy to use, cheap, and works quite well. Cover both sides of the crack area to ensure it's as secure as is possible. This will limit the amount of air that could get into the window, which could cause further damage to the glass, or cause it to shatter. Clear tape is an excellent option as it looks better than duct tap and doesn't leave sticky residue when removed.
There is also a specialized adhesive tape designed specifically for the repair of damaged window screens and can be found in most hardware stores. It comes in 2 x 30-foot lengths, and creates a patch that is invisible. This stops the crack or tear spreading. It is ideal for window enclosures for boats, RV or tent vinyl windows and even soft top car windows. It is easy to use and doesn't require any special tools or knowledge. Simply cut the correct size and remove the release paper. Then, apply. It is resistant to UV and saltwater and is made of an extremely durable material that can withstand harsh conditions. You will save a lot of money by not having to replace the entire window.
Super Glue
Super glue can be used to repair chips or cracks in glass. These adhesives join hydroxyl ions on the glass surface, creating an unbreakable hold in a matter of seconds. Cyanoacrylate glues are also good for gluing metal, wood and ceramic to glass since they can withstand moisture and high temperatures. If you're working on a large project, however it's a good idea to invest in epoxy or silicone for more sturdiness and faster drying time.
It's important to clean and dry the surface before applying any type or glue to a damaged or cracked window. You'll need to eliminate any debris that may be present and ensure that both surfaces are dry and clean. It could be beneficial to roughen up the surface a little as well, especially if it's extremely smooth. A slight sanding will give the adhesive a larger area to adhere to, which results in an even stronger bond.
When you are ready to begin the actual repair, it is essential to use a product that has been specially formulated for glasses. This will ensure the glue is safe and won't leave any unwanted marks or fingerprints. Select an uncolored glue that will become transparent once it's dried. Avoid glues that swell when they dry, because they can cause more damage of cracked glass.
You should also think about how the glass is going to be used. If it will be kept indoors and won't be subjected to much stress, then a simple super glue is sufficient. In contrast, if the glass is going to be used as part of a windshield it's best to choose an adhesive that is weatherproof.
Super glues can cure in a variety of times. Some require accelerators with chemicals to speed up the process, therefore it's crucial to follow the instructions of the manufacturer carefully. It's also a good idea to work in a well-ventilated location and open all windows to improve air circulation, since this will allow the glue to dry faster. Additionally you can always utilize a fan to boost the flow of air around your work area, which will help the glue to dry more quickly.
Glass Repair Film
Glass repair film is a cost efficient and practical method to ensure the security of windows damaged until they can be repaired professionally or replaced. Anyone can install it, even if they are not a skilled tradesperson. It is easy to install and takes only a few minutes. It is much cheaper than a traditional window board up and will keep the elements out and keep heat in. It also gives the appearance of a window with a glass coating and is perfect for schools, hospitals, offices, glasshouses factories, shops and other establishments.
When a window is broken the sharp shards that are left can cause severe injury and even death. Safety window films are constructed with a strong adhesive to make broken glass less dangerous. They also secure the glass fragments in the film. The film is transparent, which means light can pass through and it's not as ugly as board ups, especially for businesses that depend on their customers coming to their premises.
The film can be easily cut with knives or scissors. It has a peelable backing that has a grid printed on it to help with cutting. It can be positioned on the opposite side of a window. If the surface is uneven it can be overlapping 10cm to provide additional security.
There are a variety of different kinds of safety film available according to the nature and severity of the damage. Gray safety films are recommended for star breaks, whereas amber safety films are ideal for bullseye breaks and other breaks with a lot of tiny cracks. Films should be applied on clean, damp glass. It is recommended to make use of a polyethylene squeegee, and soap solution. After window repair is stuck to the glass, it is recommended to let it set for a few days.
This tough, self-adhesive film is clear and is designed to make damaged and broken glazing safe, while helping to stabilize the integrity of the glass and weatherproof it until a permanent repair can be created. Eastman Films has years of experience in the production of safety and security window films. The film is available in 15 metre long x 914mm wide rolls, and comes complete with a backing paper and release liner.
Paint
It is important to paint your windows thoroughly. This will make the paint look more appealing and will allow it to stick better. Before starting, make sure that the window is clean and scraped to get rid of any bits of paint or wood that are loose or rotten. Remove all hardware, such as latches and handles. It is also important to remove the sanding from the surface that you intend to paint. This will create an even surface so that the primer and paint will be able to bond.
It is essential to shield the areas around the window with plastic sheeting and painters tape. This will stop paint from getting onto areas that are not intended to be painted. I prefer green frog tape to do this as it provides an uncluttered line and is easy to take off when the time arrives. Painters tape is a great option for any delicate edges that are adjacent to the walls.
Once the window is protected and the window is secured, it's time to begin the actual painting process. You'll need to apply a few coats of primer, and let them dry before continuing. After priming the surface, you can lightly sand the entire surface with fine-grit sandpaper. This will help make the surface smooth for the next coat of paint. It will also assist in getting rid of any dust that may have accumulated.
You'll have to wait until the acrylic or oil-based primers or paints have completely dried before you start painting. Based on the type of paint that you are using, this process can take up to 24 hours.
It's time to paint after the primer and paint have dried. Paint the rails (horizontals first) before the stiles (verticals). This will stop drips of paint from getting to the glass. Keep a moist cloth on hand to wipe off any paint drips immediately.
