After Hurricane Katrina destroyed New Orleans, Dr John recorded Sippiana Hericane. The proceeds of the album were donated to the musicians' clinic. He also contributed to 2008's Grammy Award-winning album City That Care Forgot as an ode to the city he so deeply loves. In addition, he appeared on the 2011 album Desitively Bonnaroo by Allen Toussaint and Gregg Allman.

Dr. John is a well-known writer and educator. He has written a number of books and produced a wide range of audio and videos blues and New Orleans Piano lessons for Homespun tapes. He also composed and performed the score of the film version John Steinbeck's Cannery Row. He has performed with the Rolling Stones and the Band, among other musical luminaries.
