Latin Artists Throughout History
From music to painting, these latin artists have made their mark on the world. Some are major international stars with loyal fanbases while others are up-and-coming indie creatives who deserve all the accolades they can get. Some use traditional materials, like paints and brushes (check out Raelis Vasquez’s poignant pieces), while others rely on more modern supplies, like drawing tablets and even crepe paper. Some create prints and pieces that can fit in your home while others design murals that take over entire building facades.

In the 19th century, Latin America experienced sweeping cultural and political changes that would shape its art traditions in the decades to come. As a result, Latin American art was often heavily influenced by European styles while still retaining aspects of indigenous traditions. This multifaceted and layered approach to Latin American art is what makes it so interesting and worthy of exploration.

Throughout history, latin artists have also been unafraid to be bold and brave when it comes to their work. Many of these artists were the first to openly discuss sex, sexuality, race, religion, and more in their artistic creations. Their risk-taking and sensitivity paved the way for other artists to follow suit and express themselves in more authentic ways.

One of the most important developments in the history of Latin American music was the rise of crossover artists who blended Latin rhythms with popular pop music. This was done in order to appeal to a broader audience, and it proved to be incredibly successful. Artists such as Marc Anthony(link is external) and Melanie Martinez(link is external) continue to shape the diverse musical landscape of modern day America.

From bachata to reggaeton to salsa, Latin music has an endless amount of genres that are incredibly captivating. Bachata superstar Aventura is so beloved that they surpassed artists like Lady Gaga in ticket sales for their sold-out Madison Square Garden performance in 2010. Reggaeton queen Sofia Reyes(link is external) was praised for her empowering girl power anthem, "Mal De Amores," which taught us all how to kick heartbreak to the curb. And, Natti Natasha(link is external) teamed up with Daddy Yankee and Wisin y Yandel for their explosive bachata banger, "Mayor Que Usted," which showed off the OG reggaeton legends in all their glory.

Whether it's self-described Latina bedroom pop princesa Miranda Del Sol or the unapologetic authenticity of rapper Trueno, 2022 has been an exciting year for breakout latin artists. Del Sol's subtle sound is a refreshing change of pace in the world of pop music while Trueno isn't afraid to speak up about his mental health struggles on his music. Then there's Argentine indie band Bandalos Chinos(link is external), who combine funk rock with electro to produce a vibe that fans of Two Door Cinema Club, The Wombats, and Passion Pit will love.
