Kendo berasal dari kata Kēn yang berarti pedang dan do yang berarti jalan<
Arti Kendo secara kesuluruhan adalah suatu jalan / proses disiplin diri yang membentuk suatu pribadi samurai yang pemberani dan loyal.
Kendo menggabungkan unsur-unsur bela diri, seni dan olahraga. Dalam latihannya, kendo menggunakan alat-alat.
Alat-alatnya terdiri dari:
- Seragam (kendo gi dan hakama)
- Pedang dari bambu (shinai)
- Bogu (peindung)
Latihan kendo (keiko) terdiri dari berbagai macam tujuan untuk mengembangkan diri. Seperti halnya bela diri lain, kendo memerlukan disiplin tinggi dan dedikasi penuh untuk latihan, seperti etika (religi), postur tubuh beserta teknik melangkah, dan cara mengayun pedang yang benar.
Ada 4 jenis serangan dalam kendo, yaitu: Men, Kote, Do dan Tsuki.
1. Men : Tebasan kepala.
2. Kote : Tebasan tangan.
3. Do : Tebasan badan.
4. Tsuki : Tusukan.
Kendo dipertandingkan baik secara nasional maupun internasional. Pertandingan kendo (shiai) merupakan pertandingan satu lawan satu, baik pertandingan antar laki-laki atau perempuan. Poin pertandingan adalah jika serangan mengenai target sasaran (men/kote/do/tsuki) yang dilakukan dengan kesatuan antara semangat, pedang, dan tubuh.
