How to Get a Private Adult ADHD Assessment
It can be difficult to diagnose ADHD, especially for adults. Many healthcare professionals are not familiar with ADHD symptoms in adults, or they might not have the right tools for diagnosing.
Using self-assessment tools may provide some clues, however an accurate diagnosis must be determined by a trained professional. This includes clinical psychologists (psychiatrists or neurologists) as well as doctors (psychiatrists) and medical social workers.
What is an assessment that is private?
Many people who suspect they have ADHD will seek private healthcare in order to receive an assessment and the prescription for medication. However, it is important to realize that the only people who can determine ADHD are psychiatrists who have completed specialist training and have experience working with ADHD in adults. Counsellors and mental health professionals are able to discuss ADHD symptoms however they are not able to provide an official diagnosis.
The main method of diagnosing ADHD is through a structured interview and questionnaires. These are often founded on research that compares behaviours of people suffering from ADHD to those of those without it. During the evaluation it is essential for the individual to be honest and forthcoming and not hold back information or conceal any issues they face. The clinician will ask the patient about the severity and frequency of symptoms in various situations and over time. They will also discuss the family history, as well as any mental disorders, or drug and/or alcohol use.
A psychiatric expert will then complete an assessment of the symptoms and how they affect the individual's daily activities. This is a more detailed assessment than a typical mental health evaluation, which is why it is essential to schedule an appointment in advance. Bring a trusted family member or a friend to provide assistance and feedback. Sometimes an additional neuropsychological, psychosocial or learning disabilities tests are used to complement the clinical evaluation and help determine if ADHD is present or whether other conditions are contributing to the symptoms.
After the evaluation the clinician will let the person know what the next steps are. Typically they will discuss if medication is necessary and come up with a comprehensive treatment plan. Some clinics offer a quick stabilisation and titration service for those who want to start taking medication straight from the beginning. This service is usually only available to a limited number of patients who meet certain criteria, such as being over the age of 18 and not having a pre-existing medical condition that could prevent them from starting treatment immediately (e.g. Cardiovascular disease or hyperthyroidism.
How do private adhd assessment cost book an Assessment Private?
You can ask for a confidential assessment if you suspect you have ADHD and you are concerned about the effects it has on your work, relationships or general wellbeing. You could also request your GP for the referral to a specialist. They are able to do this through the NHS "Right to Choose" scheme, which means you can choose the wellbeing center or hospital you prefer.
After you've been referred to the clinic for an appointment, it will be scheduled to undergo the clinical assessment, which usually takes a couple of weeks. This can be done face-to-face, online or by an expert in the field. It is essential that you attend the appointment because without it a diagnosis cannot be established. It is also helpful to bring a loved one to provide additional information, but this is not essential.
Your doctor will review your medical history and discuss your symptoms in detail and how they affect you at present and how long they have been present. You should expect to answer questions about your social and personal life, how you cope with symptoms and how they affect your work and relationships. It is normal to be nervous about your first consultation, but our psychiatrists have the expertise to make you feel relaxed and safe.
The assessment will also include tests for diagnostics in addition to the structured interview. They will typically include the QbCheck or QbTest. Both are CE marked, FDA/TGA approved and use a shortened form of the Diagnostic Interview for ADHD Adults Version 5(DIVA5) to diagnose adults with ADHD. The results of the test as well as clinical judgment are used to make an accurate diagnosis.
It is crucial that you receive a valid diagnosis, as if left untreated, it can lead to serious difficulties with work, relationships and well-being. It is important to keep in mind that medical professionals may have preconceived ideas about who they believe might be suffering from ADHD and this could influence their ability to give a correct diagnosis.
What happens during the course of a Private Assessment
While every doctor will have their own process for evaluating patients but there are certain processes that all doctors consider necessary for a complete ADHD assessment. This includes a thorough diagnostic interview, data gathered from independent sources (such as spouses and other family members), standardized behavior rating scales for ADHD and other forms of psychometric tests determined appropriate by the physician.
The diagnostic interview is usually the initial step in the process. The person being assessed is asked a series of questions designed to prompt the person to think about their behavior and describe how that behaviour affects their life. It could take about an hour or more. It is important to obtain a complete and honest answer from the patient or family member. Some patients may feel embarrassed or hesitant to talk about their behavior, which can affect the quality of your evaluation.
During the interview, the examiner will inquire about the effects of ADHD on the person's relationships and daily life. They will also inquire about the history of their medical condition and how long they've been experiencing symptoms of ADHD. This is an important part of the evaluation because it helps determine if a diagnosis of ADHD is warranted.
The examiner will then fill out a series of behavioral rating scales that are standardized for ADHD. These questionnaires use research that compares the behaviors of people with ADHD to the behavior of those without ADHD and are a significant source of information objective. These rating scales are typically completed by the person being rated and their spouse.
In an ADHD assessment, tests of particular abilities are usually included, including the development of vocabulary, language and memory recall. Sometimes, the doctor may decide that a different type of psychological test or psychometric assessment is required and request it.
At Priory, we are highly adept at examining differential diagnosis (what other conditions might have symptoms that overlap with ADHD). To optimize the treatment package for a patient with anxiety could be prescribed medication and psychotherapy.
