The Advantages of Heat Pump Technology
A heat pump that runs on clean electricity can cut household carbon emissions by 75 percent compared to gas heaters.

What is a heat pump?
A heat pump is an HVAC system that uses electricity to provide both cooling and heating. It is a system like that of a refrigerator or air conditioner. It evaporates refrigerant in liquid form, which absorbs heat, as well as the air around. This heat is then transferred inside by a series of metal coils and a fan. Heat pumps consume less energy than boilers, furnaces or electric radiators to create heat because they extract their thermal energy from air and ground rather than creating it by combustion or electrical resistance.
They function as air conditioners in cooling mode. They absorb heat from the air outside, even when it's cold and then transfer it inside. However, it also functions as a heater during winter when a reversing valve reverses the flow of refrigerant changing it back to liquid form and evaporating it. Then it goes to the outdoor unit where a compressor boosts its pressure and raises its temperature further. This causes the boiling point of the liquid to drop, and it returns to a liquid state.
As the liquid refrigerant leaves the compressor, it goes through a second coil located in the outdoor unit. This coil is called an evaporator when the heat pump is heating, and condenser when it's cooling. The outdoor coil draws heat from the air through a series of aluminum fins which help transfer the heat to the evaporator.
The evaporator in the indoor heat pump is a fan that blows the air over the copper or aluminum coils, which have grooved inside surfaces to increase surface area and facilitate heat transfer. The fan keeps the air moving at a comfortable velocity to reduce drafts and noise. Certain models come with desuperheaters that recycle the waste heat from the evaporator during cooling mode and uses it to efficiently heat the water in your home.
What are the advantages of the use of a heatpump?
When it comes to saving energy and minimizing the environmental impact, there's not an HVAC system that is more eco-friendly than the heat pump.
