In June of 2016, a woman whose name was Miss Kelly told a community psychiatric nurse that she was planning to commit suicide. She was not willing to be detained under the Mental Health Act but agreed to an assessment of treatment at home. However, the assessor was concerned that she was a risk to herself or others, and was not convinced that she was competent to give consent.

In the end, the assessor advised that Miss Kelly be detained against her will. Miss Kelly did not want to be in a unit so she called Dr Ramanathan Elayaperumal, her psychiatrist. He was a consultant psychiatrist at the Home Treatment Team of Essex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

In response to the recommendation that was made, the Home Treatment Team performed a comprehensive assessment of Miss Kelly's present functioning and mental state. The evaluation included an in-depth medical history and physical exam. The review also included a comprehensive psychological assessment, family therapy assessment and a psychiatric diagnosis interview.

According to the report, Miss Kelly was afflicted by a range of mental health issues, such as borderline personality disorders, bulimia, and anorexia. She had also been victimized by her husband and was a drug addict. Her symptoms were caused by stress, anxiety, and depression. She was also diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder and the schizoaffective disorder.

Elayaperumal claims that Medtronic deliberately denied him a job due to his race and national origin. He claims that his poor performance review in June of 2000 and the denial to give him certain projects assignments were motivated by racism. However there is no evidence to suggest that Medtronic's decision-making was based on these factors. Elayaperumal's lower performance score did not result in any reduction in his salary or benefits.
