stereoscopic microscope come equipped with various stands and mounts, as well as various illuminators that can be configured for specific uses.
Horatio Greenough created an early stereo design. His concept involved using twin body tubes set at an incline at a small angle to produce stereophony.
Observing Plants
Stereo microscopes are widely utilized by biologists for dissections, botanists for plant specimen examination, geologists to study rocks and minerals samples and laboratories for quality assurance of materials as well as in various industrial settings.
Modern common main objective (CMO) stereomicroscopes incorporate both transmitted and reflected light sources with an objective lens producing an erect image at infinity. This eliminates the need for rotating turret objectives with fixed magnification levels; as well as providing higher zoom ratios than would otherwise be achievable using the same microscope design.
best Stereo Microscopes creates a collimated space between microscope head and observation tube that can easily accommodate accessories like beamsplitters, coaxial episcopic illuminators, photo or digital intermediate tubes, drawing tubes, eyelevel risers, eyelevel risers and more. This allows users to tailor stereo microscopes specifically to meet their own specific needs while also reducing fatigue over extended hours of operation.
Observing Animals
Stereo, or dissecting microscopes offer a different viewing experience than compound microscopes, creating 3-D images while offering closer observation of larger specimens. Common applications for stereo microscopes include coins, minerals, insects, plants and electrical components such as circuit boards.
Most modern stereo microscopes are constructed with ergonomic considerations in mind, including setting the diopter adjustment on eyepieces so users can view objects at a comfortable level without straining their eyes. Furthermore, modular designs enable users to add various accessories like stands, arms and illuminators into the space between objective body tube and head/observation tube assembly (known as infinity space in Figure 6). Furthermore, optical systems may be altered through either adding or subtracting lenses from rotating multiple lens turrets or zoom-type magnification systems.
Observing Fossils
A stereo microscope (also called dissecting microscope) uses low magnification reflected light to view three-dimensional specimens. It does this using separate objective lenses and eyepieces that give each eye slightly different viewing angles for three dimensional specimens to appear three dimensional to them all.
Biologists use microscopes for dissections and botanists for plant observation. Other users include medical students to analyze blood samples; jewelry makers, watchmakers and engravers; professionals repairing circuit boards or watches; as well as paleontologists cleaning and studying fossils.
Leica offers various stands and mounts, such as boom stands, articulating arms, plain or track stands and table mounts - in addition to illumination accessories that enhance clarity of view of specimens. Their ergonomic designs also make Leica stereo microscopes comfortable to use over extended periods, increasing productivity while decreasing fatigue levels.
Observing Minerals
Stereo microscopes provide numerous possibilities for the examination of mineral specimens. Common specimen types may be observed using both transmitted bottom light (for opaque samples) and reflected top lighting (for transparent specimens).
Stereomicroscopes come equipped with either one or two eyepieces (monocular head or binocular head respectively). Binocular microscopes utilize multiple eyepieces to display images at slightly varying viewing angles for greater contrast and depth perception.
Simple stereo microscopes consist of one objective lens permanently installed into their lower body housing and offer only fixed magnification levels. More sophisticated models, however, allow magnification factor to be adjusted via adding eyepieces of differing power.
Observing Insects
Insects are among the most accessible and captivating specimens to observe with a stereo microscope, from gardens and woods to your house. Their wings or furry coats captivate children and adults alike.
While Greenough-designed microscopes relied heavily on achromatic prisms to erect images, modern stereo microscopes tend to move away from this approach by employing standard widefield eyepieces with long eyepoint focal lengths instead. This design offers more ergonomic operation and offers larger magnification range than its prism-based predecessors without necessitating frequent change of objectives.
Some models employ a rotating drum system with interchangeable lenses to increase or decrease magnification factor of their microscope, while other designs utilize fixed objectives with adjustable eyepieces for magnification changes.
