How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are various pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you are having problems with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is plugged in however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. home-page feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these goes bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. The good news is that they are very affordable and easy to find particularly in the case of the Bosch model, which is what ours are. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the Audi's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It sends a signal via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should detect an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these two points. This is a standard component across the Audi 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
