Make use of a small screwdriver with a flat head or a thumbnail (A) to break open the battery compartment cover on the key fob (B). Replace the CR2025 coin battery to ensure that it is placed in the correct direction and in the right polarity.
Dead Coin Battery
A dead battery for a coin is the most common cause of a key fob that isn't locking or unlocking your vehicle. It usually shows indications before it dies, such as a decreased range or no power at all. It is easy to replace it with a new (CR2025) one at your local grocery store. Be aware that using the wrong or non-compatible batteries could damage your key fob. Make sure that the new battery has the same size, specification and voltage as the old one.
If your device was exposed to clean water, like rain or soapy tap water, it is possible that the electronic chip inside has been damaged by corrosion. You might try cleaning your chip with isopropyl Alcohol or an electronic cleaner to check if it works but it is most likely that the chip is damaged.
The most straightforward solution is to purchase an entirely new key fob. They are available from most major car dealers and can be fitted by a professional mechanic. They can also be bought online from places like ebay. It is recommended to work on a surface that is equipped with adequate lighting. This will make it easier to work on the tiny parts inside. You will also be able to avoid putting something in the wrong location. Always keep the key fob in a secure and safe area.
Water Damage
If your key fob gets submerged after dropping it into the pool or by slipping it in the wash, you may think it's over, but there's hope. When the circuit board inside the fob is exposed to water, it transforms into conductor that shorts the components. It also speeds up the process of rust and corrosion.
This is an easy fix. Simply locate something absorbent and put it inside the fob - paper towl or tissue works well. Then you can use a cotton swab that has been soaked in isopropyl alcohol to clean the circuit board and other components to clean out any battery acid residue and contamination. Let the fob air dry in a warm, dry environment for a few weeks.
Replace the battery once the fob is dry with a new one that is the same size and the same polarity ('+' (pointing upwards). The fob might be difficult opening to access the battery, however if you keep a flat-head screwdriver at hand, it should be easy to slide in. Once the fob is assembled and working, it should operate just as normal. If it doesn't, then you'll have to reprogramme it or replace the receiver module.
Radio Interference
When a keyfob is working properly, it transmits an audio frequency that is received by a module inside your vehicle. However, if the signal is disrupted in any way your key fob will not work properly. This could be due to objects or weather conditions, or other transmitters that operate at the same frequency close to your car.
In this scenario it is recommended to replace the battery on your key fob. In this instance it is best to replace the battery in your key fob.
A few aftermarket LED lighting fixtures that utilizes the same frequency as the remote key fob may interfere with the signal, preventing it from reaching the receiver modules. The LED's light source must be switched off or changed to a different frequency to prevent interference.
If the issue is still present after installing a new battery, the antenna on your key fob could be damaged or malfunctioning. This is significant since the antenna is responsible for sending a signal from the key fob to the receiver module. A scan of the OBDII can assist in diagnosing the issue by telling you exactly what's wrong with the system. The scanner will ask for details about your particular vehicle like the model and make along with the engine type and VIN number.
Faulty Receiver Module
The key fob has a receiver module that transmits signals for locking and unlocking. If this module fails and the on-board electronic components will stop functioning. Reprogramming the key fob using an OBDII scan or replacing it may help.
This problem could be caused by a dead coin-cell battery either from water damage or signal interference. Try resetting simply click the following article -board computer by disconnecting the battery 12 volts for 15 minutes. This will draw out any remaining electrical energy that could cause issues. The cable should be removed first from the negative terminal, then the positive terminal. After 15 minutes, reconnect the battery in reverse order beginning with positive first, and negative second.
The internal chip inside the key fob could be damaged by dirt or water. If your key fob stops working after being soaked, clean it using isopropyl or an electronic cleaner. Then reinstall the battery. If it stopped working after exposure to salty or soapy water the chip is likely fried and will need to be replaced.
Another possibility is an inoperable antenna module fuse that is sending the signal to lock or unlock to the vehicle. The fuse may be located in various places, based on the type of vehicle. For example it could be under the rear seat or trunk, or on the side of the dashboard.
