The Best Robot Vacuum 2023
Robot vacuums can help you clean your floors more easily. The best robot vacuums are able to remove dirt, crumbs, pet hair, and more.
While they're still unable to do as good of a job as a regular vacuum, they've come a long way in recent years. They're more efficient, smarter and (marginally) better at avoiding chair legs.
Smart Mapping
Robot vacuum cleaners employ instruments for navigation such as sensors and lasers to navigate around your home. They remove pet hair, crumbs and dirt from floors made of hard materials, like wood, tile, and laminate, and carpets and area rugs with low piles. Robots that are the most advanced map your home, so they know where they've been, and can avoid hitting obstacles like couches, chairs, and bookshelves. You can make use of your smartphone's app to set up no-go zones, which tell your robot to stay out of rooms that you don't want to clean.
Robots with advanced mapping capabilities, such as the Roomba J7, use onboard cameras and processor-powered intelligent to detect and avoid obstacles. You can then leave it to do a thorough job without having to keep an eye on the state of your floorplan or manually remove obstacles out of the way. The TP Link Tapo RV30 plus is a robot that can combine mopping and vacuuming, so it's a one-stop solution to keep your home clean. It has a powerful suction feature and can be used with Alexa or Google Assistant. It can self-empty and can also function as a security camera.
Roborock Q Revo, a less expensive robot that vacuums, mop and can be used as a robotic trashcan is a great option for homes without the need for more advanced features. It does have some disadvantages when compared to the Roomba S8 and j7. It's got a single brush instead of dual roller brushes, meaning it isn't as efficient at picking up larger objects like shoes and socks. It also lacks AI obstacle avoidance, so you might need to get rid of any clutter prior to running it.
The iLife A4s Pro is a basic robot that is ideal for those who value simplicity and proficiency. It's priced at less than $200, and provides strong, consistent suction on hardwood and low-pile carpets while avoiding tangles. It's not very advanced however it's a good choice. It's also compatible with voice commands, so you can set it up on a schedule or set up no-go zones through the app.
Object Detection
Object-avoidance technology can affect the ability of a robot vacuum navigate through your home. Certain models on this list have sensors (or cameras) to aid your robot vacuum to avoid common robot traps such as cords, toys for children and pet mess. iRobot Roomba j7, one of the most impressive examples of smart technology in action, is a fantastic example. It also has a stylish base that automatically empties the trash bin so that you don't have to.
In our testing the robot, we set the cleaner up in a large home and were amazed by the speed and efficiency with which it was able to clean floors without becoming bogged down. It has impressive maneuverability and is able to reach places most standup vacs never can, like under sofas and under beds. It also has great suction, a massive 500 ml dustbin and an over two-hour running time. It isn't able to create no-go zones, and its recognition of objects isn't exactly reliable. We observed it bumping into things at times during our tests and resulted in vase caps falling over.
It's important to keep in mind that no matter how smart a robot vacuum may be it isn't going to substitute for your upright or canister vacuum. It's not equipped to clean heavily soiled carpets. It's not able to reach ceilings or other areas that are difficult to reach. It can be an effective addition to your regular cleaning routine to remove hair, and pet dander.
Sensor systems are built into many robot vacuums to assist them navigate around obstacles and stairs. They are able to tell the moment they're likely to fall down the stairs, for instance, and also recognize cluttered areas and maneuver around them. If you're not careful, your robot-cleaner could be stuck on a cord, shoe, or other object.
Some of the more advanced robot vacuums have mapping capabilities, which allow them to design a floor plan of your home and locate themselves within it. This lets them know what areas they've already cleaned and avoid wasting time going over the same areas. It also lets them continue where they left off if they need to return to their charging dock.
Self-Emptying
A vacuum cleaner that can automatically emptys its bin when it is full is a wonderful convenience. Some models even have a window to let you know when the bin has to be emptied. This is a fantastic option for anyone with pets or children who create more mess than adults.
The majority of robot vacuums let you select whether the machine is controlled by a remote, an app for your phone, or via voice commands. They have a number of digital functions, including maintenance and scheduling tips. With the correct settings, you can program your robot to clean at a regular time, or on a weekly basis. You can also program the robot to mark out and clean specific areas of your home.
Some of the most advanced robot vacuums we've tested come with built-in cameras and smart sensor technology that allows them to create maps of your home. You can save these maps to the robot's app and use them to navigate through your home. Some of these systems even keep track of the furniture's arrangement and the transitions between hardwood floors and carpet.
Smart vacuums save time by mapping and cleaning entire houses automatically and keeping detailed records about previous cleaning sessions. You can access these records through an app on your smartphone or tablet. Many of them can be linked to your smart speaker so you can control them using voice commands.
TP-Link's Tapo RV30 Plus is an inexpensive, self-emptying robot vacuum that delivers excellent performance for the price. It can clean floors and sweep up pet hair and other particles from low-pile and hardwood rugs. It's not as advanced as other robots we've reviewed, but it does its job well.
The tank-like wheels on this model allow it to roll across the transitions between rooms and obstacles such as tangled cords for devices that can cause problems for other robots. It also comes with a large dust bin that doesn't require to be emptying manually, and it can recharge and continue cleaning when it's not able to continue cleaning. It's more expensive than other robotic vacuums we've tested but it combines powerful suction and simple controls to provide excellent value.
Voice Control
The majority of robot vacuums can be controlled by a remote or an app on a smartphone. Some can also integrate with smart speakers such as Amazon Echo or Google Home, allowing you to operate them with voice commands. This is useful if you have small children or pets who could get in the way of your cleaning routine, or if you're too exhausted to control the robot by hand.
vacuum mop combo of models come with an automatic mode that works without input. Simply press a button on the robot or in the app and it will begin sucking up food, dirt, particles, and pet hair. They can also be programmed to clean regularly which is great for those who want to set it and forget it.
Some of the more expensive models include a sophisticated feature which uses artificial intelligence to detect and scan the presence of obstacles within your home. These models can identify things such as power cords, stairs as well as furniture, and they can also distinguish between different types of flooring. This helps robots avoid dangers. This is especially helpful in homes with large areas of carpeting and other flooring coverings that are difficult for robots navigate.
Other robots have more basic object detection capabilities, but still manage to accomplish the task. One example is the TP-Link Tapo RV30 plus, which has the clean elegant, easy-to-use design of a WiFi hub but boasts a lot of the performance of a top-notch robot. It has excellent suction and is able to remove dirt and debris from hardwood floors and medium-pile rugs effortlessly. Its short, squat side brushes are less likely to get caught in stray shoes and cords and its hybrid roller brush utilizes bristles and plastic rather than the traditional bristle brush to provide an even more thorough cleaning.
The model is more expensive than other models that are in the middle of the range but it has everything you'd expect from a robot mop and vacuum. It can map and create a cleaning schedule and has virtual keep-out zones and is compatible with voice assistants. However, it doesn't have the ability to scan rooms or avoid obstacles like the S8 or j7.
