It also comes with a powerful battery which can clean for two hours before returning to its dock automatically once the bin is full.

Smart mapping is another feature that allows it to identify areas of your home that require attention and creates an easy path to get around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does a good job of moving around toys that are abandoned on the floor or furniture legs that are sticking out from under things. Roomba also comes with a sensor that can snap Roomba to its real-world location if it starts to move away from its initial location.

iRobot also added a set of rollers underneath the Roomba that do not have bristles, and therefore are more likely to avoid the tangles that previous models. They are also taller and can be placed under low couches or beds. They're designed to make this model more adaptable to different kinds of floors.

What sets vacuum and mop combo from other high-end models Its main feature is the integration of the new dirt detection feature that utilizes a camera to spot tiny bits of dirt. This is a nice improvement over the previous version which relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom cover method to bounce around the room and clean everything at minimum three times from various angles.


In our tests of its performance it was found that the Roomba 980 did well on carpets and hard flooring. It scored highly on low-pile carpet and also on mid-pile. It was successful in picking up pet hair however it struggled with the long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.

Despite these minor shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our most efficient robots, and it's even close to being as expensive as the other top-of-the-line models on this list. It's still packed with a variety of features that we'd like to find in a flagship model however it lacks all the fancy apps or smart home integration are found in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and start working immediately. After taking the yellow bin insert and battery pull tab from its undercarriage it is simply connected to an outlet on the wall or to its Home Base docking stations, press the "Clean button" and let it do the job. It will automatically return to docking station when it has run out of batteries or is full of debris. There are also indicator lights on top that indicate the bin is empty, when it needs to recharge, or if it loses Wi-Fi.
