What is a Defra Log Burner?
The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs regulates the emissions of smoke from wood-burning stoves. They have rules in place that prohibit chimney smoke within Smoke Control Areas unless using an exempt appliance or authorised fuel.
The new rules limit the amount stoves can emit smoke to 3g per hour. If homeowners fail to adhere to the new rules, they could be fined immediately. To avoid this, you must only use log burners approved by Defra and burn kiln dried wood that is marked with the 'Ready To Burn" label.
What is a Defra approved stove?
A Defra-approved stove is one that has passed the DEFRA test. Therefore, it is exempt from smoke control laws in areas where wood (and other approved materials) are allowed to be burned. The Defra logo is well-known and is widely used by the industry. Stoves that are Defra approved will often have SE (Smoke Exempt) after their name as an easy way to recognize them.
Stoves that are Defra Approved must be tested by the Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to ensure they meet strict emission standards. These tests are designed to test stoves that produce maximum heat while generating extremely low levels of smoke emissions. The low emissions are typically accomplished by ensuring that combustion gases are reburned during the secondary burning. This is essential because it allows the burning to continue efficiently whilst reducing the amount of part-burned combustibles that are emitted into the air.
DEFRA exempted stoves are environmentally friendly as they reduce the amount of part-burned combustibles thrown down the chimney. In contrast to stoves that require to shut the air vents in order to allow them to rest overnight, Defra exempt stoves always keep their flues open, which means they are less likely to send part-burnt combustibles into the chimney, where they could hinder its flow.
You can purchase an approved Defra wood burning stove, regardless of whether you live in a smoke controlled area or not. It will make your neighbours happy and will keep your chimney clean for longer. You can purchase Defra exempt stoves in a variety of styles and there are a lot of options to suit both traditional and contemporary homes.
The sleek, minimalist design is a major factor when selecting a Defra approved wood burning stove. They are great for contemporary living spaces and can be incorporated into an inglenook, fireplace chamber or can be free standing. Modern stoves such as the Aarrow i400 and the minimal Farringdon would look great in any space. You can also get Defra Exempt Stoves with traditional styled stoves like the Saxon A08E or the Arizona A08E.
What is what is a Defra Exempt Stove?
A Defra Exempt or Defra Approved Stove is a wood burning stove that has been inspected and approved by the government's DEFRA department to be used in Smoke Control Areas. The Defra stoves have been developed to emit a minimal amount of smoke and harmful emissions while also generating an extremely high level of heat to your home.
The primary reason you need a Defra stove is that if your home is located in an area designated as a Smoke Control Area then you won't be allowed to legally install a wood-burning or multi-fuel stove that hasn't been approved by DEFRA. You could face severe penalties if you install an unapproved stove in your home.
The combustion air system in Defra-approved stoves has been adjusted to limit the amount oxygen that can get to the wood during burning. This is done by modifying the top air vent. The stove can still let air in even though the vent is closed completely. This stops the firewood from burning and also prevents it from becoming thirsty for air.
You will not be able discern from the outside that a Defra wood-burning stove is different. The combustion air adjustment that is not visible is usually hidden beneath the base of the stove or inside the top of the front of the stove.
Most Defra stoves are approved to burn wood and certain types of authorised smokeless fuels, such as anthracite or Homefire brand smokeless coal. Defra stoves can be used to burn a wide variety of fuels.
There are a myriad of reasons you should consider a Defra stove, regardless of whether you reside in Smoke Control Area or not. Defra approved stoves are better for the environment, create less smoke and keep your chimney free of any deposits. They also are better for your home as they offer more heat and less toxins in your air.
What is a Smoke Control Exempt Stove?
A Defra wood burning stove, also known as a Defra exempted stove or Defra approved smoke control stove is a stove that has passed a rigorous test developed by the UK Department of Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs. This testing looks at the levels of emissions and the amount of smoke a stove produces throughout the stages of normal operation. Only stoves that have passed the Defra test can be placed within Smoke Control Areas in cities and larger towns.
The test also confirms that the stove is able to be used with authorized fuels like anthracite and smokeless coal. A log burner that is Defra-certified is also more eco-friendly and helps keep neighbors from being annoyed by nuisance emissions.
The control of the combustion air for wood burners that have been approved by Defra has been modified. This is usually done inside the firebox, or on the top of the stove. This modification stops the user from closing the air control all the way, as it could starve the stove of oxygen and cause it to release excessive amounts of smoke.
view approved stove or Defra exempt stove as it is sometimes referred to must be regularly maintained in order to ensure it's functioning properly. This includes cleaning your chimney and flue regularly. You should also make sure there aren't any obstructions, that the firebox is clean and the flue is free of any debris.
It's not a requirement to own a Defra-exempted stove however it is a smart idea to do so, especially if your home is located outside a Smoke Control Area. These stoves are more efficient and can save you a lot of money in the long run. A Defra approved appliance can also reduce the amount of smoke and dust that are released into your home which is better for your health as well as your neighbours.

As the top stove manufacturers continue to innovate their products, they have added secondary or tertiary burning systems which further reduce emissions and decrease the carbon footprint of their customers.
A Defra-approved stove can be used not only in Smoke Control Areas but also in a well built chimney that is well-insulated and insulated in any home. These wood burning stoves and multi-fuel models come in different styles to suit your tastes. There are modern and traditional options, available in an array of colors and finishes to match your interior.
