In the year 1838, A German botanist- Matthias Schleiden examined a large number of plant cells and observed that all plants are made of different types of cells which form tissues in plants. Theodore Schwann ( A British zoologist) in the year 1839, concluded that animal cells had a thin outer layer - plasma membrane and based on his studies on plant cells, he also concluded that the presence of cell walls was a characteristic of plant cells.
Theodore Schwann and Matthias Schleiden together formulated the cell theory but it couldn't explain how new cells were formed. Hence Rudolf Virchow in the year 1855, first explained that cells divided and new cells were formed from pre-existing cells (OMNIS CELLULA-E-CELLULA).
Rudolf modified the cell theory and gave it a final shape. Cell theory as understood today is as follows:
=> All living cells are made up of cells and product of cells.
=>All cells arise from pre-existing cells.
