Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves
Summary: These basic and light-weight stoves use wood as well as hexamine tablets, white fuel and gas canisters via a single nozzle. These stoves are popular during cold weather, however they are noisy and lack simmer control.
Some multi-fuel stoves are hybrids capable of burning multiple kinds of liquid fuel. The MSR WhisperLite Universal can be used with both white and isobutane fuel containers.
Optimus Nova
The Optimus Nova is a multi-fuel stove that can be used with a variety of liquid fuels. It features a quick priming burner, self-purging aluminum pump, and a precise simmer control. Its low center of gravity and wide spreading legs make it a sturdy stove that can be used on hard ground. This makes it a perfect stove for base camps for groups, kayaking, and arctic camp.
Contrary to many other stoves that use liquid fuel, which suffer from a problem where unburned fuel is left in the fuel line and the nozzle of the stove, the Optimus Nova has a shut off mechanism that operates by simply flipping the container over. The intake hoses are then removed from the fuel and forces them to take in air, which extinguishes flames and depressurizes bottles.
This is an ingenious solution to an old problem, and it works. The Nova can be used with a range of standard fuel bottles that seal using an o-ring, such as MSR bottles. It also comes with a fully featured stove bag that includes separate pockets for tools, spare parts as well as lubricant and the fuel pump.
This is an excellent all round backpacking stove for use in the UK especially for long-distance trips where a wide choice of fuels is essential. Its price is also very affordable when compared to canister stoves of similar capability. Furthermore, the Optimus Nova is easy to maintain and a pleasure to use.
Kovea Hydra
Since 2010, the Kovea Multi Fuel Stove has been a cult favorite among backpackers. The Hydra isn't as popular with UK backpackers, perhaps because they have gained popularity with brands that are more well-known or the most recent lightweight options from China or Korea. But this doesn't mean it's any less effective.
It is a small and light stove that can burn all liquid fuels like white gas, propane butane and white gas with only one nozzle. It's a pretty standard stove design with the burner bell that is bolted to a body that anchors three support legs that fold out. The pump is on the top of the fuel line and the generator loop is positioned around the inlet, and the flame spreader is situated above that. The burner is a slow-moving flame type. This makes it less affected by wind.
It's a versatile cooker as it can be used with either propane canisters or isobutane. It is easy to simmer with isobutane and propane and burns all fuels at a decent rate. However when using white gas the stove is a little slower.
One thing to be aware of with the Hydra is that the instructions are written in English which was not written by an indigenous speaker of the language. The instructions warn against the use of certain types of lighter fluids, which if mistaken for what was intended, could lead to an accident that could result in Kovea in a lot of hot legal water. Any 7/16ths UNEF-threaded gas canister of a reputable brand will work perfectly.
Primus OmniLite Ti
The Primus Omnilite Ti is a excellent choice for those looking for an all-fuel stove that can cook using a variety fuels. It can be powered by gas, petrol/gasoline or Kerosene, diesel and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for every fuel type, and you can also adjust the flame size. This stove comes with an oil pipe that is flat on the floor and can be connected to the tank easily.
While the Primus Omnilite is a fantastic stove, it will require maintenance in order to keep it working correctly. It could be dangerous as it gets flaming when priming. This is a problem that occurs with all liquid fuel stoves, which use a secondary spindle at the stove's end instead of a coil to vaporize the fuel.
Another issue is that it requires different jets for each kind of fuel. This means that if you cook using kerosene, the jet hole needs to be smaller than when using gas. It's a minor inconvenience, but it's worth mentioning.
MSR Whisper Light
The MSR Whisper Lite is one of the tiniest, lightest and most affordable multi-fuel stoves. It is also easy to fix on the field. It can be used with canister or liquid fuel and includes attachments for both. The new model is lighter by 10% than its predecessor and the burner has been revamped to improve heat distribution. This is an excellent choice for backpackers with a limited budget or for beginners.
It takes a bit of time to set up, prime and boil water, but the whistler Lite is a reliable camp stove that will not disappoint you. The flame is extremely strong when turned all the way up and will easily boil a liter of water in less than two minutes. The only downside is that it doesn't cook as well as other stoves.
MSR created the Dragonfly to be a better burner. It has a similar design to the whistler but is more compact and offers more performance. Recommended Website 's not as inexpensive as the Whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus cookset and stove is a great alternative, offering a similar setup for half the price. You can also purchase a Whisperlite International or Universal for isobutane canisters too. The same basic design is used in both but the Universal version can also be run with canister fuel as well.
Coleman Sportster II
Like many Coleman stoves, this is a no frills unpretentious unit that just gets the job done. It's strong, compact and self-contained with the tank at the bottom and burner up top. This makes it simple to use and a great option for those who are new to backpacking, who want to save on weight, and for those of us who prefer to have one or two spares in the van.
This stove is designed to burn Coleman's proprietary fuel (naptha also known as "white gas") but can be used with unleaded gas as well. This option can save you money since a gallon of gasoline can last longer than the regular Coleman liquid fuel cylinder.
It requires some practice to get a good blue flame on a stove that burns liquid fuel. You'll need to pressurize them and prime them properly before you can do this. If you do it wrong the fuel may be sprayed onto the burner, or even sputter. To master this try it out in the open before you go on your trip.
The stove will sacrifice some performance or flame odor effectiveness when using non-coleman fuels, but it's a trade-off for the extra flexibility it provides. Make sure you purchase gas that is not leaded and not that's enhanced with alcohol or methanol. These kinds of fuels can cause the unit's performance to decline and even explode.
ATG Jiko
The ATG Jiko multi fuel stove made in South Africa (formerly known as the jiko) is a lightweight multifuel stove specifically made for harsh environments such as Africa. It's an efficient and compact all-in-one system that burns solid fuel, alcohol, tabs, and gels with a single nozzle. It's a minimalist and ultralight design that is priced lower than other multifuel stoves. The fuel is also less expensive per liter when compared to gas canisters.
Other multifuel stoves have a separate nozzle for each fuel type. It isn't easy to switch fuels in bad weather, or when wearing gloves. This can also increase the overall weight. The newest models of multifuel stoves have found a way to make use of the same nozzle for different fuels, making it simpler. They can be described as hybrids or multifuel compressed fuel stoves. They are also known by other names such as white gas, isobutane kerosene and unleaded gasoline/car petrol.
Another option is to purchase an multifuel stove kit that converts your regular Trangia burner into a multifuel cooker. They are sold in camping stores that specialize in outdoor equipment and can be bought internationally. They're a great option for Trangia fans. They're capable of burning all liquid fuels, with the exception of diesel, and when fitted with the right equipment can even simmer.
