5 Stoves Defra Lessons From Professionals
Multi Fuel Stoves - Are They DEFRA Approved?

It is important that you check all regulations before buying an appliance. This includes ensuring that your stove is DEFRA approved for use in smoke control areas for wood burning and approved smokeless coal.

They have separate air controls that provide the correct amount of air for secondary and primary combustion. They also have an open grate that can be removed for easier cleaning.

Clean Burn Technology

Multi-fuel stoves can be used with a range of materials including logs. They can be used with smokeless fuels, anthracite peat or turf briquettes and more. Generally, these types of materials produce less harmful emissions than logs do. Therefore, a lot of our multi-fuel stoves are fitted with clean burn technology in order to reduce the amount of particulate matter they generate when they burn. The term 'clean burn' is also used to describe other specific technologies that decrease emissions, like pre-heated tertiary air or Ecodesign Ready.

Many of our multifuel stoves feature a raised grate, or a central grate that is riddling with asphan below it. This allows for optimal combustion conditions. This ensures the combustion process produces as little black smoke as possible during operation. It also allows the removal of the ash from below the stove, which can be stored inside the asphan below for safe disposal.

If you live in the Smoke Control Area, it's important to purchase a Defra exempt wood burning or multi fuel stove that is Defra approved. This will ensure that you'll be able to make use of the stove legally provided that it's only burning 'authorised fuels' (as according to DEFRA guidelines). The reason is that non-Defra approved stoves are susceptible to slumbering, a condition where the combustion system can become starved of oxygen which can result in the formation of black smoke. Fireplaces And Stove approved stoves (or Defra exempt wood burners) have been tested and verified to reduce the risk of slumbering which gives you the peace of mind that your stove will be clean and efficient when operated correctly.

Modern multi-fuel stoves, such as the Gallery Classic 5 Compact and the Stovax Stockton 3 come with contemporary designs with clean lines and smooth surfaces that match any room. The stoves come in a variety of colors, including matte black for a timeless appearance that blends well with many interior colour schemes. Other popular options include the neutral grey and creamy finishes as well as striking colours like blue or red that can make an impact in any space.

Defra Approved

Stoves that are DEFRA approved (also called SE or Smoke Exempt) are able to be used in regions of the UK which are designated as smoke-free. This includes many large towns, cities and urban areas. If you live in such an area and use unapproved wood or fuel and you are unable to prove it, you could face the possibility of a fine. Stoves that have been DEFRA approved provide the required amount of air for efficient combustion. This means that they produce little or no smoke that is a nuisance.

To receive the Defra approval stoves must be tested for efficiency and emissions. The Defra logo is frequently seen on stoves and websites, so it's easy to recognise. Many stove manufacturers are improving their products by adding secondary and tertiary combustion methods that can help reduce emissions. This makes their stoves eco friendly and allows them to be used with a wider range of fuels.

You should always check if the stove is DEFRA-approved prior purchasing a brand new multi-fuel or wood stove. This is especially crucial if you live in a smoke-free zone. Even if you can use authorised smokeless fuels like anthracite or briquettes, a stove not DEFRA-approved will still produce nuisance smoke, breaking the law.

DEFRA approved stoves will have an adjustment on the top air vent which prevents you from closing it all the way down. This stops you from depriving your stove of oxygen, which could slow down its combustion and cause it start to smoulder. The more smouldering takes place the more smoke will be produced and the less efficiently your stove will be. In a DEFRA approved stove, you should only use dry seasoned wood and smokeless fuels that are approved. Using damp wood or other fuels that are wet produce excessive smoke and upset neighbours. This is not only illegal, but it can cause costly fines. If you want to install a multi-fuel fireplace that is approved by DEFRA, you'll need employ an engineer to ensure that it complies with the building regulations.

Smoke Control Areas

Smoke Control Areas in the UK are primarily located in towns and large cities where excessive smoke is an issue for residents. If you reside in a smoke control zone there is no permit to burn fuels that are not approved for burning on open fires or wood burning stoves unless they are listed as exempt appliances. Defra approved wood burning and multi-fuel stoves are equipped with the latest combustion technology that prevents part-burned combustibles from going up your chimney which makes them a great choice for a smoke-free property.

DEFRA approval means that your appliance has been tested to ensure it can burn all fuels that are approved without producing excess smoke. This is achieved by providing the correct amount of air to the combustion process in order to ensure that the combustibles remain in a good condition. Wood burning stoves that have been approved by Defra are better for the environment, and less likely to cause a chimney blockage.

Defra approved stoves are the perfect option for your smoke-free home, as they offer an efficient and safe way to heat your home while ensuring compliance with the government's strict guidelines. If you're seeking a modern or traditional stove, we have a wide range of multi-fuel stoves and wood stoves that are DEFRA approved and suitable for use in smoke-control areas.

A Defra-approved stove will come with a list of exemptions that explains what fuels can be used in a smoke-control area. This is typically wood (properly seasoned) but could also include household smokeless fuels such as natural anthracite.

All of our wood-burning stoves approved by Defra and multi-fuel stoves include a manufacturer's certificate along with an user's guide and detailed installation instructions that will help you get your stove running in a secure manner. It is recommended to install your fireplace and have it maintained by a HETAS-certified engineer to ensure that the work is done in accordance with the building regulations.

Dovre provides a variety of accessories for your brand new multi-fuel or wood-burning stove that include log baskets, mesh guards and a flue liner. Contact your local Dovre retailer for more information about our products.

Energy Efficiency

Multi-fuel stoves are an eco-friendly choice since they can run on multiple fuels. Modern multi-fuel stoves are created to provide the best combustion. This means that they can heat your house for less. They also reduce emissions and can be used to complement your central heating system.

Energy-efficient stoves can significantly cut your heating costs which can help you reduce your energy bills. They consume less fuel than traditional wood-burning stoves. They are available in a wide range of heat outputs, from 5kW to 8kW.

Choosing a multi-fuel stove with triple burn technology can help to enhance its efficiency. This technology makes use of three stages to ensure that each bit of fuel is combusted completely, resulting in greater efficiency in heating and lower emissions.

Many people prefer a multi-fuel stove because it offers greater flexibility in terms of the choice of fuel. This is an excellent feature for those living in areas with smoke control because it permits them to burn both wood and smokeless coal. However, you should only burn the fuels that are recommended by the manufacturer of your stove and never household waste or wood that has been treated or painted.

When purchasing a multi-fuel stove, be sure that it is suitable for your home and it has the correct flue outlet. Also, make sure that the chimney or flue system is in good shape and that there is enough clearance around it (known as distance from the combustibles) for safe operation.

Multi-fuel stoves come in various styles to fit your home decor. Some are available in vibrant colors such as blue or red. Others come with metallic finishes and enamel coated surfaces, that can give your home an industrial look. You can find stoves that come with built-in log storage, such as the ACR Malvern Log Store and Mendip Woodland Log Store. This is a convenient way to store firewood.

A multi-fuel stove could be more flexible than a traditional wood stove but you must stick to the strict guidelines established by DEFRA in order to prevent nuisance smoke. Using a stove that is not in compliance with these guidelines could lead to a fine, so it is important to follow the instructions in the manual of your stove.
