Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves
Summary: These simple and lightweight stoves burn wood as well as hexamine tablets, white fuel and gas canisters with one nozzle. These stoves are popular in cold weather, but they are noisy and lack the ability to control the simmer.
Certain multi-fuel stoves can burn various types of liquid fuel. The MSR WhisperLite Universal, for instance, can burn both white and isobutane fuel in its canisters.
Optimus Nova
The Optimus Nova is a multi-fuel stove that can be used with various liquid fuels. It features a quick-priming burner, self-purging aluminium pump, and a precise simmer control. Its low center of gravity and wide spread legs make it a solid stove that is rock-solid. This makes it an ideal stove for base camps for groups, kayaking, and Arctic camp.
The Optimus Nova is different from other stoves using liquid fuel that are plagued by fuel that is not burned remaining in the fuel line or nozzle. This can be fixed by flipping over the bottle. The intake hoses are removed from the fuel and forces them to take in air, which stifles flames and depressurizes the bottle.
This is an clever solution to a long-standing problem and it certainly works. The Nova can be used with any standard fuel bottle that has an o-ring seal, which includes MSR bottles. It also comes with a full-featured stove bag that has separate pockets for tools, spare parts and lubricant, as well as the fuel pump.
This is a great stove for backpacking that can be used in the UK. It is particularly suitable for trips where many fuel types are required. The cost is quite reasonable compared to other canister stoves that have similar capabilities. Moreover the Optimus Nova is easy to maintain and enjoyable to use.
Kovea Hydra
Since 2010 since 2010, the Kovea Multi Fuel Stove has been a favorite among backpackers. The Hydra isn't as well-known among UK backpackers any more, perhaps because they have been able to catch up with more well-known brands or the latest lightweight offering from China or Korea. However, that doesn't make it any less effective.
It is a compact and lightweight stove that burns all liquid fuels, including propane butane, white gas, and white gas through only one nozzle. It's a typical stove design, with an ignition bell that is bolted onto the body, which is then anchored by three fold out support legs. A pump is located on the top of the fuel hose and the generator loop is positioned around the inlet, and the flame spreader is situated above the inlet. The burner is a low-velocity flame type. This makes it less affected by the wind.
A nice feature is that it can also be used with a container of propane or isobutane, which makes it a versatile small cooker. It is simple to simmer using isobutane and propane and burns all fuels at a decent rate. However when using white gas the stove can be a little slower.
One thing to be aware of concerning the Hydra is that the instructions are written in English that was clearly not written by an indigenous speaker of the language. The instructions warn you against using certain kinds of lighter fluid. If you don't follow the instructions correctly, it can cause an accident and put Kovea into legal trouble. But, any 7/16ths UNEF threaded gas canister made by a reputable brand is likely to work perfectly.
Primus OmniLite Ti
The Primus Omnilite Ti is a excellent choice to those looking for a multifuel stove that is able to cook with a variety of fuels. It can be used with gas, petrol/gasoline or diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for every fuel type, and you can also alter the size of the flame. The stove comes with an oil pipe that is flat on the floor and can be connected to the tank easily.
While the Primus Omnilite is a fantastic stove, it does require maintenance to ensure that it functions properly. It could be dangerous as it flares up when priming. This is a common problem with all stoves with liquid fuel that use a secondary spindle throttle at the stove end to vaporize fuel, instead of a generator coil.
It is also important to remember that each fuel type requires an individual jet. If you cook using kerosene, the jet hole will be smaller than if you were using gas. It's a minor issue but it's important to mention.
MSR Whisper Lite
The MSR Whisper Lite is one of the tiniest, lightest and cheapest multi fuel stoves. It is also very easy to repair in the field. It is able to be used with liquid gas or canister fuel and comes with attachments for both. The new model is lighter by 10% over its predecessor and the burner system was revamped to improve heat distribution. It's great for beginners or backpackers with a budget.
It takes a bit of time to install, prime, and boil water but the whistler Lite is a reliable camping stove that will not let you down. The flame is very powerful when it is turned to its maximum and can easily boil a liter of water in two minutes or less. The only drawback is that it's not as effective to simmer as other stoves.
MSR created the Dragonfly to be a more capable burner. Going Here to the whistler, but it's smaller and has more performance. However it's not as inexpensive as the whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus cookset and stove is a great alternative, offering similar features for less than half the price. You can also purchase a Whisperlite International or Universal for isobutane containers as well. Both versions have the same basic design however the Universal version is also compatible with canister fuel.
Coleman Sportster II
Like many Coleman stoves, this is a no frills unpretentious unit that will get the job done. It's compact, self-contained, and solid with the tank on the bottom and the burner on top. This makes it easy to use and is a great option for backpackers, beginners looking to reduce weight and those who keep a few spares in the van.
Designed to burn Coleman's own exclusive fuel (naptha gas, also referred to as white gas) This stove can be used with non-leaded gasoline, as well. This option will save you money as gasoline tanks can last longer than the conventional Coleman liquid fuel cylinder.
Liquid fuel stoves have a learning curve since you'll need to pressurize and prepare them to get a nice blue flame. If you do it wrong, fuel can pool, spray outside the burner, or sputter. To master this try it out in the open before you go on your trip.
This stove does give up some performance or flame odor effectiveness when using non-coleman fuels but it's a trade-off for the added flexibility it offers. Make sure you purchase gas that is not leaded and not that's enhanced with alcohol or methanol. This is because these types of fuels can cause the unit to disintegrate, leak, sputter and possibly even explode!
ATG Jiko
The ATG Jiko multi fuel stove made in South Africa (formerly known as the Jiko) is a light multifuel stove specifically designed for harsh conditions like Africa. It's an efficient and compact all in one system that burns solid fuel, alcohol, tabs and also gels through a single nozzle. It's a minimalist, ultralight design that is priced lower than other multifuel stoves. The fuel is also less expensive per liter compared to gas canisters.
Other multifuel stoves use a separate nozzle for each kind of fuel. This makes them a little fiddly to change over in bad weather or with gloves, and could increase their weight overall. Multifuel stoves of the newer model use a single nozzle to burn multiple fuels, which makes it much easier. These stoves are described as hybrids or multifuel compressed fuel stoves. They are also known by other names such as white gas, isobutane kerosene and unleaded gasoline/car fuel.
Another option is to purchase a multifuel stove kit which converts your standard Trangia burner into a multi fuel cooker. They are usually sold at specialist camping stores and are available internationally. These are great for Trangia enthusiasts. They can burn all liquid fuels, apart from diesel and, with the right accessories, they can also simmer.
