Best Over-Ear Headphones
Over-ear headphones are designed to surround your ears and immerse you in the audio. They are usually designed for audiophiles and include features such as active noise cancelling and control apps.
The Focal Bathys are a wireless pair with ANC and a mobile application for tweaking the EQ and presets. They also support high-res audio through USB-C for wired listening.
Sony WH-1000XM5
The WH1000XM5 headphones by Sony are the latest model in their noise cancellation line-up. The headphones have a new design and have improved ANC. They also have many of the same features, but with higher-end sound quality and better materials.
They're extremely light for over-ear ANC headphones, with just 250g. They are very comfortable to wear, even when you're reading or listening to the audiobook. The headband is supple, and it features the same design of a friction rod as the Grado Labs SR60x that prevents your ears from getting too cold.
With an audio quality that can satisfy casual music listeners and serious audiophiles, the WH-1000XM5's sonic signature is tuned to have a slight focus on bass, but not too loud or harsh. They have a large and open soundstage with excellent instrument separation that allows you to hear subtleties in your music. The earcups also feature control buttons that are responsive and intuitive to use. Swipe up or down to change the volume. You can also swipe forward to listen to the next track and reverse to hear the previous track. The headphones are capable of connecting to two devices at once and, thanks to a built-in sensor, they automatically stop the playback when removed from your head. You can also activate the ambient mode by placing your palm on the right earcup, which allows you to hear what's going on around you without removing the headphones.
They can also be connected with your voice assistant. Bluetooth low-energy is also supported, as is high-resolution audio (via LDAC). The headphones come with a carrying case made of high-end fabric and a USB-C charging cable. The headphones are compatible with Android and iOS smartphones, as well as computers running Windows or macOS. The battery life of the WH-1000XM5 is excellent. In our test, we were able to achieve 31 hours and 53 minutes when the ANC turned on which is much better than Sony's advertised battery duration of 30 hours.
The WH1000XM5 comes with a fantastic microphone for making calls. There's no muffled or static sound in the background. Noise cancelling is also excellent, and these headphones are great for public transportation or the office.
Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2
The Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2 provides a significant improvement over its predecessor. It comes with a variety of new features and performance. The Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2 is a premium model with a variety of features, including 24bit wireless streaming with active noise cancellation that is optimized, and clear voice calls on any compatible mobile or tablet. The custom-designed 40mm drivers are carefully placed inside each earcup to provide a more focused, immersive listening experience. Six strategically placed microphones ensure exceptional call clarity even in noisy environments. An inline remote and microphone lets you manage your calls and music using any compatible device.
The headphones have a elegant and sleek design to the original PX7. They feature accent rings around the earcups as well as a silver sheen for the headband. The earcups are cushioned by memory foam and fit snugly on the cranium but don't feel tight. The new shape and form was perfected over many months and offers an incredibly comfortable clamping pressure that isn't too hard on my skull, which is a rotund one.
They're 2 ounces lighter (or 307g) and are a little smaller than the Sony WH1000XM5. The headphones are lightweight enough to be carried in a backpack or bag and are comfortable to wear throughout long listening sessions. The headband can be folded using a sturdy hinge at the back.
They're powered by Bluetooth 5.2 with aptX Adaptive support, which is good for high-resolution audio and tight video sync. The included 3.5mm cord connects to the USB-C port located on the right earcup. The headphone's status indicator is a useful gesture that flashes green to indicate rapid charge and solid blue when Bluetooth pairing is in use.
The B&W App offers the same control options that the hardware onboard buttons offer - bass and treble adjustments as well as action button assignments wear detection, the ability to cycle through ANC modes and more. When you play music on your iPhone the app displays album cover and track titles. However, the most popular features like music presets and soundscapes feature are missing.
Sennheiser HD 800 S
The HD 800 S is a successor to the famous Sennheiser headphones and is designed to meet the highest expectations. Its technical construction is optimized to give an impressive detail resolution that encompasses all of the frequency spectrum as well as dynamic range and stereo panorama. It also offers the most realistic sound you'll ever hear in a pair of open-back headphones.
The headphone is 300 ohms in impedance, so a good headphone amplifier is needed to operate it at the right levels without distortion. A balanced connection is recommended, as this will double the output power and improve the overall sound quality.
These headphones are designed to be used by professionals and have a sturdy steel frame, with a mixture of leather and plastic. The design is minimalist and doesn't look extravagant, but the quality of the headphones and their construction are top-quality. They come with a carrying case, an extra audio cable and an adapter from 1/4" to 1-/8" adapter.
With an unison sound profile, the HD 800 S reproduces natural vocals and instruments, although they are a bit light on bass. The open-back design creates a spacious out-of-head soundstage. The treble is very good, with minor peaks and drops. The treble region is extremely linear, which means you won't have issues with piercing sibilants and the upper bite of a drum snare.
Even with the absence of loud bass, they can still provide dynamism and impact when required. breaking news will still be enjoyable for those who love listening to rock music with strong basslines, however they might not be like some of the other models on this list such as the HiFiMan Arya.
The Sennheiser headphones have a wonderful mid-range. They are extremely linear and have a slight scoop in the upper mids that shouldn't be noticeable to most listeners. They are also able to reproduce precise time gradations in vocals which is a huge benefit.
The HD 800 S is a pair of exceptional headphones that are ideal for professionals and audiophiles. Their outstanding sonic performance and comfortable fit make them a top option. They're expensive, but you're paying for headphones that will last for years to come and perform well in any setting.
Anker Soundcore Life q20
The Anker Soundcore Q20 is a decent set of headphones for anyone looking to pass the time or simply need an affordable set of noise cancelling headphones. The headphones come with a basic bag that will protect the headphones when you place them into the bag. Their battery can last for several long-haul flights. Their ANC does a great job of blocking out chattering seatmates and engine rumbles on the plane, but their audio profile is a bit warm and bass-heavy.
The controls on the Life Q20 are well-marked and easy to use. On the left ear cup, you'll find buttons for powering up and pairing the headphones, as well as for turning on or off active noise cancellation. On the right ear cup you'll find media playback controls which include a multi-function button that lets you activate the voice assistant of your phone and switch on Anker's BassUp feature (more on that later). You can also make use of the built-in microphone to make calls without hands your phone.
Anker's Soundcore Life Q20 headphones offers a deep and immersive listening experience due to its custom 40 mm dynamic driver, which is certified Hi-Res audio. The headphones feature the treble range to go up to 40 kHz. Their hybrid active noise cancelling technology is specifically designed to block out a broad range of mid- and low-frequency sound.
One thing to keep in mind about the Anker Soundcore Life Q20 is that they do not support the aptX codec, which is disappointing. This means that you won't not be able take advantage of the better codes' lower latency while playing games on your computer.
In terms of comfort In terms of comfort, the Life Q20's memory foam earcups and headband are soft enough to wear for long periods of time without creating discomfort. The ear cups are capable of turning so that they can adjust to the particular shape of your head so you can get a snug fit. You can also enjoy your music wired with an included 3.5mm cable, and a microUSB cable is included to charge the battery.
