Nespresso Coffee Machines
Contrary to drip coffee makers Nespresso models are small and compact. They're black-colored and can vary in price and complexity. Some have a milk frother that can be used to create Latte art and can be connected to an app to manage recipes or receive notifications about descaling.
The most basic machines, like our choice, the Essenza Mini, are simple and inexpensive, but they do not have features that can make more complex drinks. Other machines can make larger sizes of drinks like Gran Lungos.
What is what is a Nespresso Machine?
Since 1986, Nespresso has marketed single-serve machines that make use of capsules to create coffee and espresso drinks. The brand has gained a loyal fan base because of its ease speed, consistency and speed in making a hot espresso-like beverage. These machines are an excellent alternative to making espresso at home with a moka pot, which both require a lot of time and attention after each use.
A Nespresso machine makes use of pressure to extract the flavor of the pod, then it heats water and froths milk to create coffee drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos. Nespresso has a wide variety of coffee and tea blends to fit different moods and tastes such as decaffeinated and flavor options. Their machines are sleek, compact, and easy-to-use, making Nespresso a fantastic choice for those looking to take a quick sip of coffee or tea in the afternoon.
Original Nespresso machines that make espresso-like shots using the company's Original capsules, were the only machines available until 2014 which was when the Vertuo line was launched. The Essenza Mini is the smallest model in the line. It is compact, with a small water tank and space for capsules that are used. Its easy operation, with only two buttons - one for espresso and the other for a lungo--makes it easy to master.
In contrast to Keurig machines that require the user to manually add water before each use, all Nespresso models automatically discard any capsule that is not used after making. Based on the size of the reservoir and storage for capsules the capsules can hold anywhere from four to 12 used pods, which are discarded into the built-in receptacle every time you open the machine.
Some of the more well-known models are also compatible with the mobile app of the brand that lets you modify recipes and order capsules from home. This feature was tested on the sleek stainless steel Vertuo Creatista. It also allows you to make hot coffee as well as iced tea using a dedicated frother room. The only downside of the machine we tested is that it does not support all types of milk. You'll need purchase a separate frothing tool for making drinks using whole, 2% or almond milk.
The Original Line Original Line
The Original line of pod machines includes the stylish Citiz Mini and Essenza Mini. Both machines are pierced by the capsule and then pump hot water at high pressure through it, delivering an espresso or a lungo. The original machines employ 19 bars of pressure which is more than the 15 to 18 bar pumps that are found in the more expensive Vertuo models.
The original machines create crema (a thin layer of tiny microbubbles on top of the espresso) which is more dense and more affluent than the foam found in the Vertuo line. The crema is not just frost. As the Spruce states, it can make up as much as 25 percent of the flavor of an espresso. The Original line comes with more expensive Creatista or Lattissima espresso machines that have built-in milk frothers that can make lattes and cappuccinos with the push of one button.
The Lattissima Line
This series of machines is ideal for people who prefer milky coffee drinks, such as lattes and cappuccinos, and want a machine that can do it all. It comes with three recipes that can be customized and its 4.2 1 ounce milk container can be taken out and washed in the dishwasher. It's also light, making it easy to transport and store in a small space. Some customers have complained that it's not as intuitive as other Nespresso machines.
The jug of this machine has lines that show the type of beverage you'd like. You can pick your beverage while the machine is heating up. It has a sensor which stops steaming at the moment it runs out of milk.
The Lattissima One offers a great value for the price. It's available in four different colors including porcelain white, dark gray, and silky-white. The machine is easy-to-clean and has a minimalistic design that doesn't take up too much space in smaller spaces. It's also fairly affordable with a retail price of $385/PS279.
It comes with an automatic drip tray, just like the OriginalLine models. This tray catches any loose ground as you pour espresso. It's a nice feature to reduce mess, and also helps to avoid spills that can alter the taste of your drink.
The Pro and Gran Lattissima have larger water tanks than the Lattissima One. This allows them to hold more water without having refill. The two models also have a quicker heating process (as as little as 15 seconds for an espresso and 25 seconds for lungo) and also have an improved hot water function for making tea or iced coffee.
The only real downside to the Lattissima is the difficulty of changing the consistency and thickness of your milk foam. The machine is only compatible with skim or almond milk. Sorry Vegans and those who are intolerant to dairy. The wand that froths is difficult to clean. This is a typical complaint from Nespresso users. The Lattissima Pro or Gran Lattissima has a self-cleaning feature that cleans out the milky interior of the frother after every use.
The Vertuo Line
A Nespresso Vertuo machine makes a small cup of coffee that is ideal for those who enjoy espresso but prefer a quick and intense drink. The machine scans the barcode that is located on the outer rim of each capsule to determine the amount of coffee it can make. Nespresso utilizes an exclusive extraction method to ensure you get the best flavor from each Vertuo pod.
Vertuo Line has a variety of drinks including Ristretto, Espresso, Lungo (mini espresso), Americano, and Cappuccino. The machines can also be used with the Nespresso Aeroccino Milk Frother to create frothy cappuccinos and lattes.
Each Vertuo Line machine heats up quickly and can be brewed in about 30 seconds. Read More On this page have smaller water tanks than the Original Line machines and require less maintenance. There are a myriad of models to choose from and you can pick one that suits your home's style as well as your budget.
Vertuo Line machines can also make regular filter coffee unlike the Original Line machines that only brew Nespresso. They do this via an additional spout located at the bottom of the machine.
VertuoLine machines come with a revolutionary brewing system that gently extracts coffee and espresso by using the patented centrifusion technology. This enables the creation of natural crema that is safe for and enhances the coffee's aromas. The VertuoLine system also features an intelligent recognition system that adjusts extraction parameters to suit each Grand Cru blend.
Each VertuoLine machine is backed by a manufacturer's warranty. It also comes with a starter pack of 10 free Nespresso capsules. The company also offers a subscription service that provides new Nespresso capsules every month.
While there are many different VertuoLine machines to pick from but the Nespresso VertuoPlus is our choice for best overall machine. It is easy to use, warms up quickly and comes in a range of colors. It can make five different sizes of espresso and coffee including a ristretto lungo, espresso and flat white. It also brews a Latte macchiato and can be used with the Aeroccino milk frother to make a cappuccino or latte.
The only issue with the VertuoPlus is that it takes longer to brew than other machines, especially when making an Americano. For instance, if you compare it to the Bunn Fastbrew, which could brew 8 ounces of Americano in just 42 seconds The Nespresso VertuoPlus required 1 minute and 51 seconds. Luckily, you can accelerate the process by selecting an automatic mode.
