Oxidation is when a substance gains oxygen in a chemical reaction.
The stomach contains hydrochloric acid. If there is too much acid in the stomach it causes indigestion. Tablets can be taken that contain a weak alkali to neutralize the acid. A bee sting is acidic and must be treated with a weak alkali such as sodium bicarbonate. A wasp sting is alkaline and must be treated with a weak acid such as vinegar. Soils and lakes can become too acidic in areas that are polluted with acid rain. Blocks of limestone can be added to lakes to neutralize the acid and powdered limestone can be spread onto fields.
