Wood Burning and Multi Fuel Stoves That Are DEFRA Approved
The DEFRA approved stoves that burn wood and multi-fuel, also known as Defra Smoke Exempt stoves, have passed rigorous emissions tests. This means that they can be used within UK cities and large towns that are classed as smoke control areas.
A stunning contemporary styled stove from ACR that is EcoDesign 2022-ready and has DEFRA approval for use in a smoke controlled area.
Defra Approved
If you live in an area that is a Smoke Control Area in the UK and you want to burn wood in your stove then you need an DEFRA approved or Defra exempt appliance. DEFRA is the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and it is the government department that restricts the release of smoke into cities and towns in areas that could pose an issue for residents. These appliances have been subjected to rigorous testing to ensure that particulate emissions are greatly reduced, and they are qualified to pass the strict Defra smoke tests.
The Defra approval or DEFRA exempt logo is well recognised and has been widely adopted by the industry. You'll usually see it printed or engraved on the stove, but often the words are printed on the specification sheet. You will also come across several models that are both DEFRA approved and DEFRA exempt, meaning that they can be used for solid and wood.
A Defra approved wood burning stove has passed extensive tests to determine the amount of particulate matter that it produces. It will be in compliance with the Clean Air Act if it has a minimum amount of combustion air to ensure that the fuel burns efficiently and without producing too much fume. They are more environmentally friendly than non Defra approved stoves and will also help you save money by reducing your heating bills.
Defra approved wood burning stoves can be particularly useful for those who reside in a Smoke Control Area. If you use an unapproved stove in a Smoke Control Area that is not approved, then you're breaking the law and could be slapped with a hefty fine. A Defra approved stove will be more considerate of neighbors as it will not emit any noxious smoke and will generally mean that your chimney and flue system will remain more clean for a longer time.
A DEFRA-approved wood burner allows you to fit an appliance with 5kW that is fitted with a stainless steel flexible twin wall liner. (Provided the manufacturer does not insist on an increased size). This is a good option when you're looking to cut costs on the cost of a new chimney. It is a great alternative where space is at a premium.
Exempt from Defra
A DEFRA approved stove is a vital piece of equipment if you live in a smoke controlled area. The stoves have been subjected to rigorous tests to ensure that they emit a minimum amount of emissions, which reduces the amount of particulate matter (PM10) in your home.
DEFRA approved stoves are identified with the Defra Approved or a DEFRA Exempt logo. Stoves that have the logo have been independently tested and have met strict smoke control requirements.
It is important to note that you cannot make use of Defra Exempt stoves to burn dry wood in a Smoke Control Zone as this will create nuisance smoke. Also, you should not make use of non-Defra Approved multifuel stoves unless they are located in Smoke Control Area because this could create PM10 in your home and could lead to a hefty fine from the local council.
Defra approved multi fuel stoves are engineered to burn authorised wood and smokeless coal efficiently without generating nuisance smoke. They do this by using the latest combustion technology which doesn't restrict airflow to the firebox, a process known as slumbering. Stoves that go to sleep for too long can generate a lot of black smoke, which can be harmful for the chimney and stove.
A great example of a top-quality Defra Exempt multi fuel stove is the Stovax Vogue small. This well-known wood burning stove is extremely efficient with a maximum heating output of 5kW. It also has an integrated log store base which makes it perfect for installation into taller fireplace openings.
ACR Earlswood LS is a different multi-fuel wood burner that has been approved by Defra. The Earlswood is another multi-fuel stove which has undergone extensive tests to ensure it meets the strict requirements set by DEFRA for particulate emissions. It can be used in areas with smoke control and burns a variety wood and smokeless fuels.
A multi-fuel stove that is DEFRA Exempt can be an affordable solution to replace your chimney lining. Because they all have five" flue outlet this means that you can use the 125mm diameter stainless-steel twin wall flexible chimney liner rather than the standard 6" (150mm). This can be particularly cost effective where there is a limited space for a larger sized liner and especially useful where the chimney stack you have currently has difficult bends that make it difficult to install a traditional 6" chimney liner.
Smoke Control Areas
Many areas in the UK are designated as Smoke Control Areas. This means that if your property has an open flame, wood burning stove or fireplace, you are permitted to only use fuels that have been approved by the UK government. This legislation is primarily to reduce the amount of smoke that is emitted into neighbouring homes and to ensure that the surrounding is kept clean. However, it doesn't prohibit the use of solid fuel appliances or stoves when they meet certain requirements. DEFRA approved stoves (also known as Defra-exempted stoves) are an excellent choice if you reside in a smoking-free area. They've been specifically tested and meet the requirements.
A Defra approved stove can burn all fuels that are authorised, including wood without producing excessive smoke. The combustion technology in the stove that is Defra-approved is designed to limit the amount of air that the stove can be removed from during the burning process. This is typically achieved by using baffles in the stove that redirect airflow to prevent it from leaving the stove.
The most effective DEFRA approved stoves also feature a 'clean burn' feature that allows the combustion of combustibles with a part-burn such as ash and soot and allows them to be ejected out of the chimney, rather than into the room. This stops combustibles that have been burned partially from entering the stove and causing a build-up which could eventually cause black smoke.
If you install an appliance that has a Defra exemption it is essential to burn only the specific types of fuels that are allowed in it since failure to follow this rule could result in penalties under the Clean Air Act. This is especially true if you are burning damp wood or other wet fuel which will produce nuisance smoke. Check with your stove's manual or with your provider to determine which fuels are permitted in your stove.
Gr8Fires offers a variety of DEFRA-exempt stoves that are suitable for smoke-controlled areas. For example the Dimplex Langbrook is a stylish woodburning stove which is Defra exempt and can burn any of the authorised fuels. The model is available in a variety of heat outputs and in a variety of finishes including a matt black finish.
Heat Output
If you see a Defra approved symbol on the stove, that means it is suitable for use within a smoke control zone when burning wood or other permitted fuels. The Defra approval process includes thorough examination and testing to ensure that the stove is in compliance with the Department of Environment's requirements for low emissions and high combustion efficiency. These features will help your stove be more efficient in heating your home and will help you to reduce your carbon footprint.
There are many multi-fuel stoves that have been approved by Defra, ranging from small models with 4kW to larger models with 5kW. The best model is determined by various factors, like the size of the room and the amount of heat needed. Using a stove too big for your space could result in overheating and will lead to unnecessary expenditure on fuel. It is important to get the advice of a qualified when selecting a wood-burning or multi-fuel stove.
You should also ensure that the stove is compliant with Ecodesign 2020 regulations. These regulations are designed to enhance the energy efficiency of appliances and decrease their environmental impact. Ecodesign 2022 stoves burn fossil fuel more efficiently and produce less CO2 and other pollutants. They are also easier to clean as they produce less soot, tar and other pollutants.
Most Defra approved multi fuel stoves have air controls that can be adjusted to regulate the amount of fuel burned. Most of these models are also equipped with a grate as well as an ash pan to help in the efficient combustion of smokeless coal. The ash pan collects the ashes from the firebox, and stops them from interfering with the air flow to the combustion chamber.
defra stove -fuel stoves are available in a variety of different styles and colours. Bold colours like red and navy can provide a striking look to your living space. Metallic finishes can give it a sleek, contemporary style. Multi-fuel stoves come in different sizes so you can choose the one that will best fit your space.
