5 Things That Everyone Doesn't Know About Defra Approved
What is a Defra Approved Stove?

A defra-approved stove is a wood-burning stove that has been tested and passed by the UK Government's Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. This permits them to be used in Smoke Control Areas in the UK.

Defra the English government department that is responsible for the environment, food production, standards, agriculture and a thriving rural economy. Defra has also developed effective protocols for managing notifiable illnesses.

Approved by Defra

Defra approved wood stoves and multi-fuel stoves meet the standards of emission set by the government for use in Smoke Control Areas. These new standards do not prohibit wood stoves from being employed in smoke control areas, but they do restrict the amount of smoke that can be generated by them.

We are pleased to offer an extensive range of defra approved stoves from top brands like Arada, Burley Parkray, and Stovax. All of our Defra-approved stoves have the latest clean burning technology. They come with secondary and tertiary systems to reduce emissions. This means less smoke coming out of the chimney, and leaves a less carbon-based footprint.

Defra approved disinfectants are able to clean and disinfect hard surfaces, including structures, farm equipment, vehicles and crates. The Animal and Plant Health Agency maintains the Defra approved list of disinfectants. They charge a fee to obtain new back-toback approval trade names. APHA can also retest the efficacy of a product at any point. The results can be added to the list of approved disinfectants without the requirement to submit a sample.

Approved for Smoke Control Areas

Many areas of the UK are classified as Smoke Control Areas, meaning you are only allowed to burn fuels that are approved or appliances exempt from the regulations. This is to help reduce air pollution from burning fuels that are not approved, causing nuisance smoke and ash build up. Many cities and towns fall in this category. To avoid breaking the law and receiving an infringement charge, you must use the DEFRA approved stove, fire or fireplace to burn wood logs. Stovax has a range of multi-fuel stoves, wood as well as fireplaces and fires that are DEFRA-approved for use in Smoke Control Areas.

The stoves have passed the strict DEFRA emissions tests and have the lowest levels of smoke allowed in Smoke Control Areas. They can be used to burn various fuels, including logs, semi-anthracite or anthracite briquettes, and manufactured smokeless fuels, such as heat logs. You can also use them to burn gas, electricity or low volatile steam, or a mix of these. On the DEFRA site, you can see a complete list approved fuels.

When selecting a stove to your home, look out for the DEFRA logo which is found on the manufacturers website or at their showrooms. If the stove has the DEFRA logo, you can be sure that it is Defra-approved for use in smoke-controlled zones and can burn wood in these zones. It is still necessary to use a suitable chimney liner However, the smaller 5kW stoves are typically easier and cheaper to fit than larger models as they can be fitted with a 5" twin wall stainless steel liner instead of the standard 6" liner.

You could be eligible for an approval from your local authority if you don't own a DEFRA-approved stove. This will allow you to burn fuels that are not permitted in your home. You'll need to look on the DEFRA website to determine if an exemption is available. There are other guidelines to follow, such as installing smoke alarms. Also, you must follow the rules for Smoke Control Areas if you have an outdoor chiminea or BBQ.

Approved for Smokeless Fuels

To be approved by Defra, wood burners need to be able to burn smokeless fuels authorised by the government, without generating excessive emissions. These fuels, referred to as 'Smokeless Coal ' or 'Heat Logs are tested to ensure they comply with the requirements of the Defra's Smoke Control Areas. These fuels are a fantastic alternative to real logs, since they are less pollutant and emit less smoke than seasoned logs.

Before the smoke control zones were established residents were allowed to burn whatever they wanted to. This led to health issues and air pollution for people who lived in urban areas. Since the rules were enacted, Defra worked to reduce the amount of pollutants that are present in these areas. They achieved this by regulating the types of fuel that can be used in fireplaces and stoves.

If you live in a smoke controlled zone, then it's crucial that your stove is Defra approved so that you don't face hefty penalties for breaking the rules. Even if you do not reside in a smoke-free area buying a defra-exempt stove is worth it. They are safer for your chimney system as well as the environment.

Defra approves wood-burning stoves and multi fuel stoves that have been tested to ensure compliance with the UK's Smoke Control Areas legislation. If you are buying a new stove, ensure that it has a Defra approved badge. This will guarantee that it meets all the required regulations.

This can be cheaper, but it is still recommended to consult your local council if aren't sure if are in a Smoke Control Area.

The department is managed by a cabinet minister, who is directly accountable to the Prime Minister.
