Lost My Car Keys? Here's What to Do
You will lose your keys at some point, regardless of how organized you are. If this happens it is crucial to be prepared.
It is recommended to contact a locksmith, or go to a dealership, based on your vehicle. These experts can create a replacement key to fit your vehicle.
1. Retract your Steps
There aren't many things more painful than losing your car keys. It can ruin your day, cause lots of stress and even lead to unwanted calls from strangers. It doesn't matter whether you are a meticulously organized person or not, losing your keys can occur to anyone.
The best-case scenario would be that they show up exactly where you last left them. (Parent Logic says this is the case). In reality the situation could be more grave. It is crucial to keep your cool and return to your path if you lose your keys.
Remember that many things aren't lost forever and can be located in the most unlikely places. Therefore, before you resort to extreme measures, it's a good idea to go back and search thoroughly. Bring a flashlight with you to look through dark corners and drawers. You can also ask a friend to help you search for items, as a second pair of eyes can be very helpful.
2. Check the Inside
If you haven't found your car keys after retracing your steps and checking in common places like key hooks, search for them inside of pockets, bags and jackets you've worn or wore recently. If you lost your keys in a store check with other shoppers or employees if they've noticed something out of the ordinary.
Examining your bags and pockets for keys that are missing might seem obvious, but you should take the time to do it with care. Clean out all pockets you carry including purses and jackets, and make sure to check every zippered space. It's also recommended to go through the trash and recycling bins in the event that your keys were to fall out of your bag and got crushed by something other.
You can also retrace your steps and search places where you know it isn't in, like the freezer or fridge. Many times, items disappear when we go to them, but then slam them away and forget about them.
3. Check the Outside
You've put in the hours and are now ready to go home, put on your comfortable sweats, eat pizza and on your favorite TV show. But, you discover that your car keys have disappeared.
Make sure you check your desks and pockets that are too packed. It's also not uncommon to leave keys in a messy spot such as on the handle of a door or in the refrigerator, so be sure you've checked these places.
Under the car is another favorite place to hide. If you decide to do this, make sure you access the gas cap from outside your car as thieves can easily spot you crouching under your vehicle to hide your keys there.
You can also put your keys in an nook on the dashboard or under the seats. Make sure you don't secure them too tight as you might accidentally smash them when you shut the door of your car.
4. Contact the police
We can lose things when we are distracted. You might be on the run for a few minutes and you have put your keys on the seat, or you may need two free hands to carry a load of food items. Whatever the reason, it happens to all.
It is essential to notify the police immediately if you have lost anything. You can then make a police report to protect your vehicle from thieves. This is crucial in the event that you lose your keys outside your home, in the shop, or anywhere else in public.
Before you begin ensure that you go back to your steps. Try to be your own Sherlock Holmes and recreate the scene in your mind from the last time you seen them. Asking other people around you if they've seen your keys is a good idea. This will help keep your car safe and prevent other people from using it (which may result in extra expenses like new ignition and door locks). If you have a spare key, it's recommended to create an exact copy of it in case this occurs again.
5. Call for a locksmith
It's common for people to lose track of where they have put their keys, especially when they're busy or distracted. There are a few basic ways to assist.
Retrace the steps you took and searching for the areas where you think they might have been left. If you're still struggling to locate them, try looking inside the car. It's not common for people to lose their keys in the visor or on the keychain.
Contact a locksmith and inquire whether they have your keys. They may be able make you a new key or even alter your locks if necessary. They also have the tools and expertise to remove bent or broken keys from locked doors.
Make sure you have proof of ownership when you call a locksmith. This includes your vehicle registration or title. You might have to wait several days for a dealer to send you a replacement key, according to your particular situation.
6. Call Your Insurance Agent
You might lose your car keys at times and it can ruin your day. It could be because you were running an errand and accidentally left keys on the floor or perhaps you put your keys down for a moment to grab something and lost track of it.
Reporting a stolen or lost key to the police as soon as you can is important. This creates a paper trail and will help prevent other people from using your vehicle without your permission. It also stops you from being punished.
If you've reported your keys as lost to the police and your homeowner's insurance could be able to take them in as personal property. However, replace lost keys to talk to your agent to ensure you're covered before you file an claim.
You might want to consider keeping an extra key or purchasing a Bluetooth tracker like Apple AirTags, Tiles or the many other options available. This will save you from having to go through the stress of a car key replacement and give you peace of mind knowing your keys are always at hand.
7. Get a Bluetooth Key Tracker
Sometimes you'll lose your keys at the time you least would. You might be on the run and do not remember to put them on the seat or may be getting out of your car after an exhausting day at work and you can't remember where you put them.
There are ways to prevent this from happening again. One of the best is to use a Bluetooth key tracker. These tiny devices are connected to your keyring or wallet, and can connect with an app on your phone. When you open the app it will sound or flash to help find your keys. These Bluetooth trackers have community features that allow other people to help you locate them if your keys are out of reach.
You can also make sure you don't lose your keys by always putting them in the same spot every time you arrive home. It doesn't matter if place them in an table in the entryway or on an iron by the door. Making this routine a habit will make it easier to locate your keys in the future.
8. Get a New Key
It is essential to inform your insurance company right away if you lose your keys to your car or if they're stolen. You can be assured that your claim will be dealt with properly in the event of any damage to the vehicle in the future.
If you have a regular key (which does not have a chip) you can get an alternative from any locksmith or hardware store. This is typically the fastest and least expensive alternative.
It could be more difficult for cars that have smart keys and require an electronic fob. You'll likely need go to your local dealer and present proof of ownership in order to obtain an entirely new key. This can cost you up to $200 based on the make and model of your car.
To avoid this, you should keep an extra set of keys somewhere else than your keys. It's also an excellent idea to clean your office or home, especially the place where you are likely to lose things.
