What Is Multi-Fuel DEFRA Approved Stoves And How To Use It
Multi-Fuel DEFRA Approved Stoves

A multi-fuel DEFRA approved stove allows you to legally burn wood and some non-smokeless fuels in the UK Smoke Control Area. They usually provide a continuous supply of secondary combustion air to prevent the fuel from smouldering and releasing noxious smoke.

A Defra stove (sometimes called a DEFRA smoke exempt appliance) has been tested and passed the UK Government's Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs criteria for emission levels.

Smoke Control Areas

The smoke that is produced by open stoves and fires in the UK can contribute to air pollution, particularly in urban areas. Smoke Control Areas have been set up where only certain types of fuels and home fire appliances are allowed. These are strictly regulated under the Clean Air Act to reduce environmental pollution. If you live in the Smoke Control Area then it is crucial to use only Defra approved stoves that burn wood and log burners. This will ensure that you are burning legal fuel and not creating nuisance smoke that irritates neighbors.

A large portion of Stovax multi-fuel and wood burning DEFRA approved stoves come with secondary and tertiary combustion systems that allow you to burn your logs efficiently and, in turn, aids in reducing emissions. This means that you can produce less smoke and have a lovely fire.

A Defra approved appliance, or to use its full name "Smoke Exempt Appliance" is one that has been tested and has been approved by the UK Government DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and legislation on smoking levels in Smoke Control Areas. This means that the stove produces only a small amount smoke when it is in operation. This also means that you can legally burn certain kinds of wood in your stove provided it is'ready to burn' firewood with less than 20 percent. You cannot burn damp, wet or spruced wood in the DEFRA approved stove since it will produce nuisance smoke that is contrary to the provisions of the Clean Air Act.

There are many traditional and contemporary Defra stoves that are available. It is also important to consider the type of fuel that you will be burning. Some Defra approved stoves can only be used with wood and do not have the option for a multiple-fuel burner.

If you want to burn anthracite, smokeless coal or other fuels that have been approved by Defra in your stove you will require a smoke-control kit. This can be fitted on non-Defra-exempt appliances. The Stovax store offers a variety of smoke control kits that are compatible with non-Defra approved appliances.

Coal

Multi-fuel stoves that are certified by the Defra are the most eco-friendly option. They let you relax in the warmth of your stove while minimizing your impact on the planet. The stoves must be in compliance with the regulations of the government and manufacturers are obliged to follow the rules if they want to continue operating.

The most sustainable way to heat your home is to utilize a DEFRA-approved wood-burning stove. These stoves can also burn other fuels, including coal. Coal is a fossil fuel that first began to form about 300 million years ago. During that time swamps with huge ferns and other plants were commonplace on Earth. The plants submerged into the water after their death and then formed peat as they grew. This was then buried beneath layers of rock and other materials until it was transformed into solid coal.

When coal is burned, it releases a large amount of energy as heat and sulphur dioxide that can cause pollution of the air. DEFRA approved multi-fuel stoves is a major cause of acid rain, which can harm rivers and lakes, causing harm to wildlife and damaging crops. Because of the risk of acid rain, many countries, including the United States have banned the use of coal.

While coal does emit many pollutants, it is still a significant part of the heating world. It is the most sought-after fossil fuel and has a lower cost than other fossil fuels, such as natural gas and oil. Moreover, coal is a very energy efficient fuel that generates lots of heat per kilogram.

A DEFRA exempted wood-burning stove, or DEFRA approved, stove is a stove which can be used to burn authorised fuels like briquettes and coke in smoke-controlled areas. These stoves are also compatible with a variety of firelogs. Firelogs are compressed sawdust wood waste, wood waste or any other wood waste that's sometimes mixed with paraffin to enable it to be lit.

If you reside in an area that is a Smoke Control Area, you must only use the DEFRA approved stove to prevent massive fines. Choice Stoves offers a range of DEFRA-approved wood burning stoves from leading manufacturers like Mi-fires. Contura, Stovax and many more. We can assist you in choosing the ideal stove for your home and ensure it is installed by a licensed engineer to avoid any problems.

Wood

Wood stoves that have been approved by Defra are great for homeowners who live in smoke-free areas. They are less polluting when they burn low-smoke, clean fuel. They are also economical and come in a variety of styles that can be adapted to your interior design.

Oft, multi-fuel stoves which are DEFRA exempt include a secondary inlet above the main vent. The air inlet is pre-heated and used to keep ash from accumulating on the glass of the stove. It also assists the burning logs to draw air. Some stoves may also have a tertiary air inlet, which is heated by flue gases as they exit, which ensures a better combustion and cleaner flames.

You can also select an approved log burner from DEFRA designed to burn seasoned, dry hardwoods. This kind of wood is sourced locally and is carbon neutral. When trees are burned, they release carbon dioxide, which was absorbed by the trees during their growth.

Log burners approved by DEFRA can be used within smoke-controlled areas provided that you only use fuels that are authorised. If you're unsure if your property is in a Smoke Control Area you can contact your Local Authority to find out more.

A DEFRA-approved wood stove is a great option for those who like the traditional look of log burners, however, they would like to be able use other fuels in addition. However, it's important to remember that only DEFRA-approved stoves are able to be fitted with a 5" chimney liner when burning wood and must be fitted by a certified installer. If you'd prefer an edgier style, there are many stoves that are DEFRA-approved that can be installed into fireplaces and inglenooks, and still look fantastic. It's important to note that these stoves do not offer the option to burn authorised fuels such as smokeless anthracite oval. You'll need an additional woodburning stove which is Defra approved to use this feature. This is a great option, as burning unauthorised fuels in a stove that is not DEFRA-approved could result in you being in violation of the regulations and you risk prosecution.

Smokeless Fuels

The use of smokeless fuels in a multi-fuel DEFRA approved stove is a great method to reduce the amount of soot and emissions generated by your fire. These smokeless fuels are usually anthracite-based and are available in the form of brquettes. They are designed to emit less pollutant than household coal and create an even and steady fire. They are a great option for those in smoke control areas, but they are also suitable for anyone who likes using a traditional open-fire or multi-fuel stove.

A DEFRA-approved wood stove has a secondary or third-burn system that enhances combustion and removes harmful gases and particles. These systems can also help prolong the life of your stove by reducing the rate at which it wears out or blocks the flue. Most newer stoves are DEFRA certified, however older stoves can be modified by a kit to become fully compliant.

The Portway Luxima, a wood burning stove that has been DEFRA-compliant. The large, cast iron door, which is warp-free, gives a spectacular view of the fuel bed. The stove has a stylish bevelled door and an elegant chrome handle that contrasts with the style.

Selecting the best stove for your home is a crucial decision, and that's why you need to ensure that your new stove is in compliance with all the requirements of the government. A DEFRA approved stove will help you save money, give you more flexibility, and will keep you and your family warm and cosy.
