9 Signs That You're An Expert Defra Approved Expert
What is a Defra Approved Stove?

A defra-approved stove is wood-burning stove that has been approved by the UK Government Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. This permits them to use in Smoke Control Areas within the UK.

Defra is an English government department with responsibility for environmental protection and food production, as well as standards agriculture, as well as an thriving economy of the countryside. Defra has also developed robust protocols for tackling notifiable illnesses.

Approved by Defra

Defra approved stoves, also known as Defra smoke exempt stoves are multi fuel stoves that satisfy the government's emission requirements for use in Smoke Control Areas. These new standards don't prohibit wood stoves from being employed in smoke control areas however they limit the amount of smoke that can be generated by them.

We are pleased to offer an extensive range of defra approved stoves from top manufacturers such as Arada, Burley Parkray, and Stovax. All of our Defra approved stoves come with the most recent clean burning technology. They have secondary and tertiary systems to reduce emissions. This results in less smoke coming from the chimney and leaves a less carbon-based footprint.

Defra approved products are suitable to disinfect and clean hard surfaces, such as farms, buildings and vehicles. The Animal and Plant Health Agency maintains the Defra approved list of disinfectants. They charge a fee for new back-to-back approvals of trade names. APHA can also retest the effectiveness of disinfectants at anytime. This can be performed without submitting samples, and the results will be then added to the approved disinfectants list.

Approved for Smoke Control Areas

Many parts of the UK are classed as Smoke Control Areas, meaning you can only use fuels that are authorised or appliances that are exempt from being used. This is in order to reduce air pollution caused by burning unauthorised fuels, which can cause nuisance smoke and ash build up. The majority of cities and towns are in this category. To avoid breaking the law and getting the penalty of a fine, you should only make use of an DEFRA approved fireplace, stove or fire to burn wood logs. Stovax offer a variety of wood and multi-fuel stoves, fires and fireplaces that are DEFRA approved for use in Smoke Control Areas.

These stoves have passed strict DEFRA emission tests and have the lowest levels of smoke that are permitted in Smoke Control Areas. They can be used to burn various fuels, including logs, semi-anthracite or anthracite, briquettes or manufactured smokeless fuels like heat logs. They can also be used to burn electricity, gas and steam coal with low volatile, or any combination of these. On the DEFRA website, you will see a complete list approved fuels.

Look for DEFRA lawful stoves on the manufacturer's website or in their showrooms when you are looking for the stove. If the stove has the logo, you can be assured that it is Defra-approved for use in smoke-controlled areas. It can be used to burn wood within these zones. You'll still need to install a chimney liner that is suitable but the 5kW smaller stoves are typically easier and cheaper to fit than larger models as they can be used with a 5" twin wall stainless steel liner instead of the standard 6" liner.

You may be able get an authorization from your local authority if you don't own a DEFRA-approved stove. This permits you to use fuels that are not approved in your home. You'll have to check the DEFRA website to determine whether an exemption is available. There are other rules to follow for installing an alarm for smoke. It's also worth noting that if you have an open fire, BBQ or garden chiminea, you'll need to follow the same guidelines as Smoke Control Areas.

Approved for Smokeless Fuels

To be defra-approved wood burners must be able to burn smokeless fuels authorised by the government without producing excessive emissions. These fuels are commonly called 'Smokeless coal or "Heat Logs' and have undergone stringent tests to ensure that they meet the standards set out by Defra for Smoke Control Areas. These fuels are an excellent alternative to logs made from real wood because they are cleaner and produce less smoke than seasoned logs.

Before the smoke control zones were established, residents could burn whatever they wanted to. This led to pollution of the air and health issues for people who lived in urban areas. Since the rules were put in place, Defra has worked to reduce the amount of pollution in these areas by regulating what is allowed to be burned in stoves and fireplaces.

If you reside in a smoke-free area, it is crucial that your stove is Defra approved so that you don't face hefty penalties for breaking the rules. Even if you don't reside in a smoking-controlled area buying a defra-exempt stove is worthwhile. They are better for your chimney system and the environment.

Defra approves wood-burning stoves and multi fuel stoves that have been tested to ensure compliance with the UK's Smoke Control Areas legislation. If you are buying a new stove make sure it has a Defra approved badge. This will ensure that the stove is compliant with all required regulations.

There are two main methods to get Defra approved. The first way to be Defra-approved is to have your stove and fuels tested. This is a costly and expensive procedure. The other way is to buy a Defra approved stove and make use of Defra approved fuels in it. This may be less expensive however it is recommended to inquire with your local council if aren't sure if live in an area that is a Smoke Control Area.

In England The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is responsible for protecting the environment and control including air quality. It also represents the United Kingdom at international negotiations on environmental, agricultural and fisheries issues. The department was established in 2001 following the merger of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF), the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) and a part of the Home Office. It is overseen by a cabinet member who is accountable to the Prime Minister and other cabinet members.

Approved for Multi-fuel Stoves

They are available in a range of styles and sizes and can be either freestanding or inset. They are perfect for those who want to reduce their carbon footprint and save money on their heating costs.

The Defra Logo is easily recognizable and widely used in the industry. It is often seen on the title and specification sheets of a variety of stoves, and signifies that the appliance is capable of burning authorised fuels in smoke controlled areas. In some cases the stove will also have an SE (smoke exempt) logo, which signifies that the stove can be legally installed in a smoke-control area when burning authorised fuels.

Defra approved wood burning stoves are usually more efficient than older models and come with the latest clean combustion technology. Many top stove makers such as Arada Burley Parkray Stovax, have developed secondary and third-generation combustion systems to boost the efficiency of their products.

If you reside in an area where smoke is regulated and you're not using a DEFRA-approved cooking appliance, you could face a fine of up to PS1000. To avoid this, make sure that your stove is DEFRA approved prior to purchasing it.
