Defra Approved Multifuel Stoves
Defra approved multifuel stoves are a great option for those living in smoke controlled areas. They are extremely safe and can burn wood or other approved smokeless fuels.
The Defra logo is typically found on the appliance or written in the specification to indicate that it is suitable for use in Smoke Control Areas. They also have a high energy rating and have low emissions.
Clean Burn Technology
We offer a range of wood-burning stoves that are approved by the Defra. This means they are able to meet stricter emission standards when used with wood or other approved fuels. The stoves have been independently tested and built to burn a variety of fuels. A stove that is Defra-approved will feature features like secondary and tertiary combustion that maximize the use of energy consumed and minimize harmful gases.
Defra approved multifuel stoves will often have a 'SE' logo or SE (which stands for smoke exempt) after their name which means that the stove has been tested by an independent third party to show it can be used legally in Smoke Control Area with logs and other approved solid fuels. The testing process includes a series of tests to check the stove's performance in a range of conditions, and to ensure that the stove can produce at least 5 grams of particulates per kilogram when burning wood.
To achieve this standard, Defra approved stoves have a modified top air vent that prevents users from closing it all the way. Closing the top vent too far will reduce the oxygen supply to the fire, causing it to smoulder rather than burn. If you did this with a non Defra approved stove you would be breaking the law and could be charged with nuisance smoking offences.
The best way to avoid the stench of smoke that comes from the wood burner is to buy kiln-dried or seasoned wood. This is wood that has been dried for a long period of time which helps reduce the moisture content to less than 20%. A simple wood moisture meter can be used to measure the moisture content of your wood.
You can also limit the amount of noxious smoke generated by your Defra approved stove by only using dry, well-seasoned, kiln-dried, or spruce logs. Never burn damp, wet or unseasoned wood. This will cause lots of smoke and could result in you being fined by your local authority.
Smoke Control Area Approval
DEFRA approved stoves are built to meet strict air quality requirements that are outlined by the government. These stoves can use various fuels, including wood and certain smokeless substances that are 'authorized' in Smoke Control Areas.
Burning untreated wood and some other wet fuels, without the use of a DEFRA exempt or approved stove will cause smoke that could annoy neighbours. This can also cause issues with local air quality particularly if you live in an urban zone. If you are located in the Smoke Control Area and burn unauthorised fuels or use an appliance that is not intended to be used with authorized smokeless fuels, then you could be fined or be charged with a criminal offense.
Defra approved stoves have secondary and tertiary burners, which burn fuel at lower temperature. This results in less particulate (PM2.5). This is accomplished by using stainless steel liners and a unique convection system that forces air down the chimney even when the fire is out. DEFRA regulations stoves lets the stove burn wood and other fuels more efficiently, while producing significantly less emissions.
A Defra Approved Stove will also include an adjustment for the top air vent that prevents you from closing it completely. When you stop the air supply to a stove, it stops burning properly and then begins to smolder and produce a lot of smoke. Defra approved appliances allow you to partially close the vent, but not completely, so that the fire will burn at a lower temperature and still comply with UK regulations.
When selecting a brand new Defra approved stove it is crucial to think about the design and style of the stove, and whether it will fit in with the decor in your home. There are a variety of styles and sizes available that range from traditional fireplaces to inglenooks, to more modern designs that look stunning in open-plan living spaces.
Most Defra approved stoves come with a 5kW flue outlet so they can be used legally in Smoke Control Areas, which encompass the majority of UK towns and cities. This will also help to save money on installation costs, since the stove will only require five" flue liner, instead of a more expensive 6" liner.
Aesthetics
Multi-fuel stoves don't just have to be functional. They can also add style and appeal to your home. Many models are available in a variety of designs to match your style either modern or traditional. They tend to have sleeker lines and cleaner appearance than wood-burning stoves. This makes them a more appealing choice for any space.
When you are choosing a multi-fuel stove, make sure that it is appropriate for the space and is compatible with your chimney or flue system. Check that the stove meets local requirements for clearance from combustible material. You can get an idea of these requirements by reading the guidelines of the manufacturer that will specify how far you must keep flammable items like curtains walls, furniture, and even walls away from the stove.
If you are looking for a multi-fuel stove you may also be interested in the airwash system. This keeps the glass windows clear to allow you to enjoy your fire. Some multi-fuel stoves come with a removable grate that makes it easier to switch fuel and clean the stove.
Defra approved multi-fuel stoves are designed to reduce emissions and pollution, making them an environmentally friendly choice for homeowners who are conscious of their environmental footprint. They're also highly efficient and allow you to use less fuel and lower the cost of heating.
Many Defra multi-fuel stoves are available in various styles to suit your aesthetic preferences. For instance stoves that are inset, such as the Hamlet Solution 5 Compact and the Woodford Lovell C400 fit into a wall or existing fireplace opening to create a seamless look. For stoves with a cylindrical design, such as the Opus Harmony or the ACR Solis are slim and rounded, they can be placed on a hearth to save space.
Many stoves are designed in a manner that reflects the tradition of their maker. They could have cast iron construction, or intricate details. These stoves are ideal for country cottages and other homes with an old-fashioned, rustic look. Others have a modern style, featuring simple lines and materials such as glass and steel. These models are perfect for homes that have minimalist designs like those found in urban areas or modern homes.
Energy Efficiency
When you buy a DEFRA approved multifuel stove you can rest assured that it will comply with and even exceed the most recent standards for clean air. Top stove manufacturers such as Arada, Stovax and Parkray have invested in cutting-edge combustion technology that reduces amount of smoke that is produced when burning. These modern stoves, which use the latest clean air technologies including secondary and tertiary combustion systems are more sustainable and lower household fuel bills.
If you reside in a Smoke Control Area or not, there's a stove that's ideal for your home, from the stunning Danish design of the Uniq 37 to the cosy and modern design of the Arundel Deluxe. There are models that offer a more traditional style and are suitable for existing fireplace chambers and inglenooks.
The Defra approved multifuel stoves that we offer come with a choice of finishes to complement your decor including matt black and gloss black enamel to majolica enamel and gloss buttermilk. Many of our multifuel stoves are compliant with 2022 EU Ecodesign emissions reduction standards which allows you to cut down on your energy bill while making a positive impact on environment.
DEFRA approve wood stoves are also available for those who reside in a Smoke Control Zone, making it easy to stay on the right side of the law. Always ensure that you use approved types of fuel (like'smokeless' anthracite coal) in your stove as it's illegal to burn damp wood or any other wet fuels and you may risk a fine.
If you live in a Smoke Control Area, opt for a DEFRA Approved Multifuel Stove with the ClearSkies mark to ensure that you're following the law. This means that the stove has been tested to ensure that it meets all current UK and European emission standards, including those for smokeless fuels and wood. On the product page of the stove you can verify its status by looking for a symbol that reads "DEFRA approved" or "Approved By DEFRA".
