If the key will not start, you'll have to reset the vehicle or contact an authorized mechanic.
Keys with Plastic Cases
If you are considering buying a new BMW from Corona or Chino Hills you will need to know how to program the key. This process differs depending on whether your vehicle uses the standard key fob, which has an actual key inside or an advanced BMW Digital Key. Follow these steps to program a brand new BMW Key:
Find the appropriate keys for your vehicle. If you need to, add a plastic case to secure the key. These cases are specifically designed for smart key systems and provide an excellent protection all-round against damage. They are typically sealed on all sides, making them especially resistant to scratches and bumps.
Certain BMW keys come with touchscreens that can be used to control music or make phone calls and more. This kind of key can be extremely advanced, but it is best to treat it as a phone by keeping it out of water. Water can damage the screen's full-color.
If your vehicle comes with a BMW Digital Key, you can share it with up to five family members or friends members with an compatible iPhone. The app allows them to lock and unlock the car and limit the driving (such as the maximum radio volume or maximum speed limit). This feature is available for most BMW models equipped with an NFC chip.

Don't buy an original BMW Key from an online retailer. These keys aren't guaranteed by BMW and could be used to steal your vehicle.
It can be costly to replace the BMW key fob, particularly when it has to be programmed by an expert dealer. There are however some things you can do to cut costs. First, check the owner's manual to determine which kind of battery your key fob requires. Many modern BMWs are powered by a CR2032 watch battery.
Keys with Light Buttons
When you think of BMW keys, you'll picture those clunky black rectangles that had big square buttons. These were the standard key fobs found in BMW automobiles in the 1980s and '90s. However, modern BMW models use a completely different type of key fob. They look like credit cards, and they can even unlock the car with your smartphone. They can also control your windows as well as open the trunk. Find out more about the hidden capabilities of these more modern BMW keys.
The earlier BMW keys only have one purpose, and that is to open the doors and start the engine. The most recent BMW key fobs have more functions, including memory hot keys that let you link your key fob with your contacts as well as navigation destinations and other settings. Keys can also be used to activate the car's start/stop buttons to conserve fuel. The keys also have the safety feature that will shut off the engine if it is running for more than 15 minutes in the car is parked.
The BMW Digital Key allows your compatible iPhone or Android smartphone to function as the car's key fob. It makes use of ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to communicate with the vehicle's system. The UWB transmitter is integrated into the remote headlight of the key fob. This means you can't accidentally leave your vehicle running. This feature is ideal to stop carbon monoxide getting into your garage, or if you didn't lock the door when leaving your home.
Alternately, you can purchase an BMW Display Key that acts as a traditional key fob. This is a small display that can control your car's doors, windows and alarm system. It also controls the climate control as well as preconditioning and service needs. The BMW Display Key also provides visual instructions for complicated parking maneuvers.
If you own a Comfort Access key, you must deactivate the old key and code the new key prior to using it. If you don't do this, the BMW may not recognize your key and refuse to start. If this happens, you will need to get a replacement BMW key fob.
Keys that fold Keys
A folding key is a form of BMW car key that folds in itself to make it smaller. This makes it easier to put in your purse or pocket. It also prevents keys from falling out of your pocket or being lost. Keys like these are usually used in older BMW models that don't feature push button start. These keys can be used to start and unlock your vehicle's engine as well as control certain features, such as the power windows and sunroof.
BMW's folding key system utilizes a pair LF (low-frequency 125 KHz) transmitting antennas located on the exterior of the vehicle as well as inside the door handles. When the key fob is near the handle, these antennas transmit the key's ID to the PASE module in the vehicle. The interior lights and door locks turn on if the key fob matches that of the vehicle. If key bmw wish to use the BMW's folding keys you must first enable it through the iDrive menu under 'my vehicle.' Then, go to'vehicle settings' and choose 'doors and keys.' You can then program the key fob to unlock and start the car once it's folded.
Unlike traditional BMW key fobs, modern BMW display keys feature a small LCD color touchscreen on them that offers a number of handy functions, including the ability to remotely start and lock your car. You can also open your windows, turn on the sunroof and even disable the BMW's sensors using these keys. They're more expensive than traditional BMW key fobs, and they can be damaged if exposed to dust or water.
If your BMW key fob isn't working correctly, it could be time to replace its battery. The process of replacing the battery in a BMW key fob is relatively simple, but you'll need to consult your owner's manual to learn more. You'll also need to re-sync the fob to the central locking system of your BMW. This process typically involves specific button combinations and key inserting methods, so it's best to speak with an BMW dealership or a certified mechanic for assistance.
