15 Surprising Stats About Defra Approved
What is a Defra Approved Stove?

A defra-approved stove is a wood-burning stove that has been approved by the UK Government Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. This allows stoves to be used in Smoke Control Areas in the UK.

Defra is an English government department that is responsible for environmental protection and food production, as well as standards agriculture, as well as a thriving countryside economy. Defra also sets solid protocols to deal with the spread of notifiable diseases.

Approved by Defra

Defra approved stoves, also known as Defra smoke exempt stoves are multi fuel stoves that meet the emission standards of the government for use in Smoke Control Areas. These new standards do not restrict the use of wood stoves in these areas, but they do restrict the amount of smoke they can produce while in operation.

At ESSE we are pleased to carry a large range of defra-approved stoves from the top manufacturers, including Arada, Burley, Parkray and Stovax. All of our stoves that are Defra-approved have the latest clean burning technology. This means they come with secondary and secondary combustion systems that help to cut down on emissions, resulting in less noxious smoke coming from the chimney and leaving a more environmentally friendly footprint.

Defra approved products can be used to disinfect and clean hard surfaces such as farms, buildings and vehicles. The Defra approved disinfectants list is maintained by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), which charges an amount to approve new back-to-back approval trade names for disinfectants. APHA can also test the effectiveness of a product at any time. The results can be added to the list of approved disinfectants without the requirement to submit samples.

Approved for Smoke Control Areas

Smoke Control Areas are found in numerous areas of the UK. This means that you are able to only use exempt appliances or burn fuels that have been approved. This is to help reduce air pollution caused by burning fuels that are not approved, causing nuisance smoke and ash builds up. To avoid breaking the law or getting fined, you must only burn wood logs using a DEFRA-approved stove, fire, or fireplace. Stovax offer a broad range of wood and multi-fuel stoves, fires and fireplaces that are DEFRA approved for use in Smoke Control Areas.

These stoves have passed strict DEFRA emissions tests and are able to meet the low smoke levels permitted in Smoke Control Areas. They can be used to burn different types of fuels like logs, anthracite or semi-anthracite Briquettes, or manufactured smokeless fuels such as heat logs. They can also be used to burn electricity, gas or low volatile steam, or a mixture of these. You can find a list of all the approved fuels on the DEFRA website.

Look for the DEFRA Logo on the manufacturer's website or in their showrooms if you are considering the stove. If they have the logo then you are aware that the stove is Defra approved for use in smoke-controlled zones and is able to burn wood in these zones. You will still need an appropriate chimney liner, however, the smaller 5kW stoves are able to be fitted with a 5" twin-wall stainless steel liner instead of the standard 6" liner.

You could be eligible for an authorization from your local authority if don't own a DEFRA-approved stove. This permits you to burn fuels that are not approved in your home. You'll need to go to the DEFRA website to determine whether you qualify for an exemption, and there are specific guidelines to follow for example, having a smoke detector installed. It is also important to note that if you have an open fire, BBQ or garden chiminea, you will be required to follow the same rules as Smoke Control Areas.

Approved for recommended DEFRA stoves

To be approved by the defra, wood burners need to be able to burn fuels that are smokeless authorised by the government without producing excessive emissions. These fuels are often called 'Smokeless Coal or 'Heat Logs' and have undergone stringent tests to ensure that they meet the standards set by Defra for Smoke Control Areas. These fuels are an excellent alternative to logs made from real wood, because they are less smoky and emit less smoke than traditional logs.

Before the smoke control zones were put in place residents were allowed to burn whatever they wanted. This caused health issues and air pollution for those living in urban areas. Since the rules were put in place, Defra worked to reduce the amount of pollutants that are present in these areas. They did this by regulating kinds of fuel that could be burnt in fireplaces and stoves.

If you live in a smoke controlled zone, then it's vital that your stove is Defra approved so that you don't have to pay huge penalties for breaking the rules. Even if you do not reside in a smoke-free area, investing in a defra-exempt stove is a good idea. They are safer for your chimney system as well as the environment.

Defra has endorsed wood burning stoves as multi-fuel stoves that have passed the UK Smoke Control Areas legislation. If you are buying a new stove make sure it is branded with a Defra approved badge. This will guarantee that it meets all the necessary legislation.

There are two primary methods to get Defra approved. One method is to make your stove and the fuels Defra approved by having them tested, which is very expensive. The other way is to purchase a Defra approved stove and only make use of Defra approved fuels. It is more affordable to use an approved stove by Defra but you should still check with your local council first if not sure whether you live in a smoke-free zone.

In England, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is responsible for environmental protection and control, including air quality. It also leads for the United Kingdom in international negotiations regarding fisheries, agricultural and environmental issues. The department was created in 2001 as a result of the merger of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF), the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) and a part of the Home Office. The department is overseen by a cabinet minister, who is directly accountable to the Prime Minister.

Approved for Multi Fuel Stoves

DEFRA approved stoves have been tested for low emissions and high efficiency. These stoves are suitable for smoke-free areas and can burn wood, coal and logs. These stoves are available in a variety of sizes and styles, and are installed or freestanding. They are perfect for those who wish to reduce their carbon footprint and save money on heating bills.

The Defra logo is easily recognized and has been widely adopted by the industry. It is commonly found on the specifications and titles sheets of many stoves, and signifies that the stove is capable of burning authorised fuels in areas that are smoke-controlled. Some stoves also sport the SE (smoke-exempt) logo, which indicates that they are legal to install in a smoke-controlled location when burning approved fuels.

Defra-approved wood burning stoves provide the most recent technologies for clean combustion and are generally more efficient. A number of top stove makers such as Arada, Burley, Parkray and Stovax have developed secondary and tertiary combustion systems to increase the efficiency of their stoves.

If you reside in an area where smoking is regulated and you're not using a DEFRA-approved cooking appliance, you could face penalties of up to PS1000. To avoid this, you should ensure that your stove is DEFRA approved prior to purchasing it.

A DEFRA-approved stove is the best and most eco-friendly way to heat your home. A DEFRA approved wood burning stove can aid in reducing your energy bills and will also stop smoke from causing trouble to neighbors. You'll be able to find the ideal DEFRA-approved wood burning or multifuel stove for your home. There are even a few models which are both DEFRA-approved and Eco Design-2022 compliant, so you can get the best of both! Explore the options to find what's on offer.
