Defra Approved Multi Fuel Stoves
DEFRA approved multi-fuel stoves allow you to burn wood as well as approved smokeless fuels in smoke controlled areas. They emit little emissions, provide clean combustion and come in various designs that can be used in any home.
Defra (Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs) regulations prohibit the release of dark smoke from chimneys located within Smoke Control Areas, without an exempt device or authorised fuel.
Efficient combustion
Many homeowners use Defra approved multi-fuel stoves in their homes due to their effective heating performance and low carbon footprint. These stoves can be used for a variety of fuel types that include logs and smokeless coal. In addition, these models typically offer a lot of control over the fire which allows you to get the perfect flame for your wood stove.
This is important as it ensures that the least amount of ash is produced and can help keep your chimney clean. This also means that the fire will continue to provide heat for longer without needing to be replenished. You will save money over time and enjoy your fire without having to worry about the condition of the chimney.
Stoves that are Defra approved have been tested to be sure they meet certain emission and efficiency requirements. They will usually be labelled as 'Defra Approved or 'SE' for Smoke Exempt, which makes the most secure option to buy an appliance for your home.
You can find a wide choice of DEFRA approved stoves in our online store, which includes everything from classic to contemporary designs. For example the Gallery Classic 5 Compact multi-fuel stove is a classic style that is perfect for cottages and other rustic cabins, while the Stovax Stockton 3 and Go Eco Excel Wide are both perfect for modern-day rooms.
The ESSE 700 Vista DEFRA-approved multi-fuel stove has also been designed to have a modern appearance. The stove features a clean burning system that helps reduce sulphur dioxide emissions and nitrogen oxides. The body is made of steel and is durable and will last for a long time. It has an energy rating of A and 78.5 per cent efficiency. It can rapidly heat large areas using kiln-dried logs.
There's also an array of colors for the new multi-fuel stove you've purchased, including neutral shades such as cream and black. The bold colors like green and red are also available to provide a striking appearance to your home. Metallic finishes can provide an elegant look that is modern. If you prefer a subtle look, you can select a stove with an enamel coating. This provides an even, glossy surface that is easy to clean and will be matched to most interior color schemes.
Reduced emissions
Multi-fuel stoves that have been approved by Defra are not just environmentally friendly, but also help to reduce household emissions. The main pollutant emitted when burning solid fuels like coal and wood is ultra-fine particulate matter, also referred to as PM2.5. These fine particles can penetrate the lungs, causing respiratory diseases and heart diseases.
Modern multi-fuel stoves approved by DEFRA are designed to lower the amount of this harmful substance. Most of the stoves featured here at The Stove Yard are SIA Ecodesign Ready and have been subjected to rigourous testing to ensure that they operate far below the new manufacturing limit of 3g/hour smoke emission for appliances used in Smoke Control Areas. We also have a selection of models that have been endorsed by the independent clearSkies scheme, allowing additional reductions in emissions.
If you live in an area under Smoke Control, you must only use seasoned and well-dried wood to avoid a lot of smoke. If you do intend to make use of fossil fuels in your multi-fuel stove, there are plenty of alternatives to smokeless that can will significantly reduce the amount of harmful gases your stove releases.
The latest DEFRA-approved stoves, such as those in our selection, offer a secondary and third-generation combustion system that reduces the carbon footprint of the users and air pollution. These systems aid in the conversion of more volatile gases produced by solid fuels, such as wood into heat energy. This means that you can make use of less of your favorite fuel to get the same amount of heating, meaning that your fuel expenses will be lower as well!
Although this is a fantastic feature of DEFRA approved multi-fuel stoves it should be noted that Defra approved stoves don't provide the same amount of time for burning as stoves that are not Defra approved. This is because the continuous supply of secondary and third-party combustion air is required to prevent the flame from burning. If you are planning to use the stove for the purpose of slumber burn (i.e. overnight burning) it is recommended that you use a Defra Approved model cannot allow you to extend your fuel supply to the same extent as an non Defra model.
Smoke control regulations
DEFRA approved wood-burning stoves may be used in smoke-control zones (check online to determine if you live in one). In areas that have smoke control the emissions of log burners are restricted to prevent nuisance smoke. This stops the release of harmful substances into the air that can upset neighbors and create unhealthy conditions for people living nearby. Making sure you use an DEFRA approved stove in a smoke-free area is important to avoid a fine when the stove is found to emit excessive quantities of smoke.
Smoke control zones are usually urban areas with a high population density, such as large towns and cities. The primary goal of smoke control regulations is to preserve air quality standards by limiting the emission of particulates into the air. Defra approves multi-fuel stoves are conforming to these regulations and have been tested and certified to ensure that they produce a minimal amount of emissions. This is crucial to ensure the safety and health of those who live in these areas.
It is important to note that smoke-free stoves should only be used with approved fuels, such as dry well-seasoned, and well-seasoned wood. It is not legal to burn damp or wet wood in a smoking control zone as they can produce excessive smoke. Burning household waste, such as old furniture, pallets or fencing is also prohibited as they are likely to have been treated with chemicals that could release toxic substances into the air when burned. Choosing firewood with 20% moisture percent or less is recommended to avoid excessive emissions and ensure that the stove is operating properly. Woodsure Ready to Burn is a great option for buying firewood that is in line with this requirement.
A DEFRA approved stove can burn a variety different fuels, which means you don't have to modify your chimney to enjoy a cozy fire. It is crucial to remember, however, that your stove requires regular cleaning and maintenance for it to function effectively. If you do not maintain your stove regularly it will be less efficient in reducing emissions and could damage the flue system or chimney.
