What is a Defra Log Burner?
The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) regulates the emissions of smoke from wood burning stoves. There are regulations that ban chimney smoke from Smoke Control Areas except if you use an exempt appliance or fuel that is authorised.
The new rules limit the amount that the stove can emit of smoke to 3g/hour. If homeowners fail to comply, they will be fined on the spot. To avoid this, only use log burners that have been approved by Defra and burn kiln dried wood marked with the 'Ready To Burn" label.
What is a Defra Approved Stove?
A Defra approved stove is an appliance that has passed the DEFRA test and is exempt from laws in zones of smoke control that allow burning wood (and other fuels that are approved by DEFRA). The Defra logo is well-known and has been adopted by the industry. Stoves that have been approved by Defra are often identified with SE (Smoke-Exempt) as an easy and quick method to identify them.
Stoves that are Defra Approved have to be tested by the Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to ensure that they meet strict emission standards. These tests are designed to ensure that stoves deliver maximum heat output while generating low levels of smoke emissions. The low emissions are typically achieved by ensuring combustion gases are reburned during the second burning. This is important because it allows the combustion to continue efficiently while reducing the amount of combustibles emitted into air.
DEFRA exempt stoves are more eco-friendly than other wood burners because they are less likely to release part-burnt combustibles being released into the chimney. In contrast to stoves that require to shut the air vents to allow them to 'slumber' overnight, Defra exempt stoves always keep their flues open, which means they are far less likely to discharge part-burnt combustibles down the chimney where they can stop it from getting there.
No matter if you reside in a Smoke Controlled Area or not, a Defra Approved wood-burning stove is a good choice because it will keep your neighbors happy and will ensure that your chimney stays clear for a longer time. Defra exempt wood burning stoves are available in a wide range of designs and styles, and there are a variety of options to fit traditional and contemporary homes.
Many people opt for a Defra approved wood burning stove because of its minimalist, sleek design. These stoves are perfect for contemporary living spaces. They can be put in in a fireplace chamber or inglenook, or they can be free-standing. Modern stoves such as the Aarrow i400 and the minimal Farringdon are perfect for any space. You can also find stoves that are Defra exempt like the Saxon A08E and the Arizona A08E.
What is an Defra Exempt Stove?
A Defra approved or exempt stove is a wood-burning stove that has been approved and tested by the government's DEFRA Department to be placed in Smoke Control Areas. The Defra stoves are designed to emit the least amount of smoke and harmful emissions while also generating a high amount of heat for your home.
The main reason you need a Defra stove is that if your house is located in a Smoke Control Area then you will not be able to legally install a wood-burning or multi-fuel stove that hasn't been endorsed by DEFRA. You could be facing a hefty fine if you install an unapproved stove in your home.
The combustion air system of stoves that are approved by Defra has been modified to limit the amount oxygen that can be absorbed by the firewood during the process of burning. This is done by changing the air vent on top. This means that the stove will still allow a tiny amount of air to pass through even if you close the vent all the way. This prevents the firewood from being depriving of air and keeps it from smouldering.
You won't be able to discern from the outside that the Defra wood burning stove is different. The adjustment for the combustion air is hidden under the base of the wood stove or in the top front.
The majority of Defra stoves are permitted to burn wood and specific kinds of smokeless fuels that are authorised like anthracite or Homefire brand smokeless coal. However there are a variety of Defra stoves that are multi-fuel-approved and can be used to burn a range of different fuels.
There are a variety of reasons why you should consider a Defra stove, whether you reside in a Smoke Control Area or not. Defra approved stoves are more sustainable for the environment, generate less smoke and keep your chimney clear of deposits. They are also more efficient because they produce more heat and emit fewer toxic gases into the air.
What is what is a Smoke Control Exempt Stove (SCE)?
A Defra stove, also known as a Defra exempt stove or Defra smoke control approved wood burning stove, is a stove that has passed a strict test designed by the UK government's Department of Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra). This test measures the amount of smoke and emission levels that the stove is able to produce in all phases of normal operation. Only stoves that have passed the Defra test are able to be used within Smoke Control Areas in large cities and towns.
The test also guarantees that the stove is able to be used with authorized fuels, such as smokeless coal and anthracite. A Defra-certified log burner is also more environmentally friendly and helps avoid annoying neighbours with nuisance emissions.
Wood burners that are approved by Defra have been given a combustion air control altered, typically inside the firebox or on the top of the stove. This modification prevents users from closing the air control completely because this could dehydrate the stove and make it release excessive amounts of smoke.
To keep a Defra approved or Defra-exempt stove working properly, it should be maintained regularly. This includes cleaning your chimney and flue on a regular basis. Also, you should make sure there aren't any obstructions and that the firebox is clean and the flue is free of any debris.
It is not required to own a Defra-exempted stove, but it is a smart idea to do so especially if your house is located outside of an area designated as a Smoke Control Area. These stoves are more efficient and can save you lots of money in the long term. Additionally the fact that an Defra approved stove will reduce the amount of smoke and dust that is emitted into your living space which makes it the best choice for your health and the health of your neighbors.
Nordpeis offers a variety of DEFRA-approved stoves, both in modern and traditional designs. To determine if you live in a Smoke Control Area and want to discuss your options, call your local Varde retailer.
What is a Clean Burn Technology Stove?
Clean Burn Technology is the alternative for stoves and fireplaces and gives you a more refined burn. This reduces dust levels in the air which is healthier for the environment. It also saves money on fuel bills because you get more heat out of the same logs. The stoves are efficient enough that they have resulted in a reduction in the necessity for chimney sweeps because minimal amounts of soot are produced. As the top stove manufacturers continue to improve their products, they have also incorporated secondary or tertiary combustion systems which further reduce emissions and reduce the carbon footprint of their customers.
A Defra-approved stove can be used in Smoke Control Areas but also in a well built chimney that is insulated and built to last in any home. These multi-fuel and wood burning stoves come in a range of designs to suit your preferences. There are numerous options for both traditional and contemporary stoves, in various colours and finishes that match your decor. They are also available in a variety of sizes, so you can choose the ideal one to fit your fireplace or inglenook.
All Defra approved wood stoves have been subjected to rigorous tests and examinations to ensure they comply with the Department of Environment Regulations, have low emissions and high efficiency in combustion. This means that you can be confident that you are burning your fuel responsibly while making money at the same time. Only using kiln dried wood that is dry and ready to burn will improve the performance of your stove.
Buying a Defra Approved stove is a ideal choice if you reside in a smoke-free zone and want to experience the cozy warmth that only a real wood burner can offer. Many of our customers who have purchased a Defra stove are already reaping the benefits of a healthier environment and have noticed savings on their fuel bills. We suggest that your stove is professionally installed by an engineer in gas who is licensed to do the job. DEFRA lawful stoves will ensure that the stove is in compliance with all building regulations. Regularly examining and maintaining your stove will ensure it is operating at its peak and prevents the need for expensive repairs in the near future.
